Odd collection of issues

Thread Starter
Warning, this is a bit of an in-depth recount of the issues I've had over the past few days, read the summary below if you don't have much time.

Summary:
- Checked the "Force Constant Voltage" option in MSI Afterburner, comp crashed.
- Upon restarting, getting a black cursor and nothing more after windows login screen
- Safe mode nearly unresponsive, Windows Automatic Startup repair fails
- Used an acronis backup (system drive image) from a day before, same results.
- Had some issues with SSD not being auto-detected in a timely manner, possibly solved now?

I've been having a weird assortment of issues that all started the other night - I'm not sure if they're all related but I would assume so since everything was working fine since then.

I was having the problem that some of you might be aware of where my 2nd monitor has some tearing/flickering on the screen when my graphics card has even a 1mhz overclock to either clock speed. I read that it may have to do with voltage fluctuations or changes between 2d/3d clocks.

Opened up MSI Afterburner, left my clocks at stock for both cards (crossfired 5870 eyefinity 2gb cards, both exact same card) and checked the "force constant voltage" box to give it a whirl. I opened up Starcraft 2, full screen, crossfired, and about 15-30 seconds into a game it hard locked with the music playing, grey screen, and some other indicators that my video was crashing.

I thought I would restart, no big deal. I restarted and was greeted with a black screen with my cursor, AFTER I had entered my password (Windows 7 Pro). I noticed that it hung on the "Welcome..." portion for an abnormally long time. I could open the task manager, explorer.exe was running, only consuming about 5k~ memory, but nothing ever happened. If I tried to kill explorer, my task manager would freeze. If I tried to start a second explorer, same results.

Starting in safe mode worked a *few* times, but if I tried to browse around my drive, do anything really, it would start to become unresponsive (mouse still moves around ok, but programs stop responding).

I had a good image of my boot drive (acronis) from the day before, and actually managed to restore from that. I thought if it was a software related issue, that it would be taken care of.

I got stuck at the black screen again after rebooting.

I took a day off, came back today to try some hardware/reseating. I figured it had to be a hardware issue at this point. I removed my second (non-primary, no monitors plugged into it) video card, and tried to start it up. My POST hung on detecting my primary (SSD) drive. I restarted, and eventually it booted into Windows just fine.

Popped the 2nd card back in, this time hung on my SATA DVD Drive, but I was able to restart and boot ok again.

I plugged my crossfire bridge in to connect the cards again, and this time it hung at the "Loading Windows" splash screen and never booted. I had to restart. After restarting, I let Windows Startup Repair run and it failed to correct the problem that it found.

A few more subsequent times, hung on my SSD drive for upwards of 2 minutes, but eventually booted, and here I am now.

Currently, everything is plugged in except 1 intake fan on the side of my case. I wanted to throw this post up and see if there were any ideas floating around before I restarted again in the event that it doesn't come back up for me.

I know this is a giant wall of text but I want to be as detailed as possible:

I have had no issues with this system's stability for quite some time. The last issue that I had was with my SSD dying on me, not even being recognized in bios. It was replaced as per my warranty with an identical drive that I have since had no problems with, but this is similar to the warning signs the last one gave before it died (taking a while to post, and then not showing up in the bios eventually).

I'm hoping these aren't related issues, but I just wanted to see if my situation wasn't as unique as searching around these forums and various others on the web have made it seem to be.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well...Not saying this is the case but Iv'e had a few symptoms just like that because of my dying PSU. Try opening it completely up and blowing all the dust out.

I recently (about 3 months ago) did a custom sleeving job on my Corsair AX-850. I keep my case extremely clean and use dust filters. It is nearly brand new, but I will try dusting it out, keep it simple first I guess, thanks for the advice!

I might also mention that I ordered a Vertex 3 after the SSD issues - been meaning it upgrade anyway and if my SSD is indeed the problem this would be a good opportunity I suppose..

Sounds exactly like a failing hdd.
Have you ran chkdsk?

Also did you have ulps disabled or enabled before you started in/uninstalling your drivers/cards?

I agree with grunion definitely sounds like the ssd is screwed. Can you recover your Acronis back up to another hard drive and boot from that?

I'm thinking that the drive is going too and maybe I just read into the MSI/graphics issues a bit too much.

I was able to boot up fine after I made those posts last night, but I have a Vertex 3 in transit. I'm not going to worry too much about checking the drive out - I'm just going to take this as an opportunity to upgrade as I've been eyeing a next gen SSD for a while now. I'm happy I have a good backup plan, haha.

Thanks for all of the help, rep to everyone that had some advice!

EDIT: Can you explain the ULPS setting? I have heard of it before but have never stumbled upon an explanation of what exactly it does, so I have never messed with it.
