Duke 3d had the best graphics at the time it was released, until 1 year later when quake was released and destroyed all the 2d games.

Duke Nukem 3d was released in January 1996, Quake was released in June 1996, so that makes it half a year. And frankly, Quake looks like ass. It's palette consists entirely of grey and brown and the only real notable thing about this game is that it's fully 3d, 'cause actually it looked (aesthetically) incredibly horrible and the gameplay was the same as Doom. There's a sad story behind Quake - id wanted to release another badass all-original game, but they simply bit more than they could chew, the development cycle killed all the creativity they had and in the end they simply decided to make a Doom clone and release it.

Oh, and Quake wasn't the first true 3d fps. Descent was. And since we're talking about the whole 3d fps thing, I consider Half-Life to be THE first real 3d fps, because Quake and its sequel were pathetic games worth mentioning only because of their graphics (and even then, it's only technology, the aesthetics are horrible). Duke3d embarrasses, obliterates, utterly destroys both Quakes in every single aspect aside from graphical technology. Also, let's not forget about Shadow Warrior and Blood. After all Duke Nukem 3D is only the first in the 3D Realms trilogy of Build Engine games.

Quit half a year ago. And they weren't awesome games. Generic first person shooters with no originality whatsoever and a nauseating color palette. The only reason Q1 (and 2 and even 3) got this popular is because: a) id made Doom and b) true 3d. That's it. I mean it's not an atrocious game, it's just mediocre at best. Especially when compared to Duke Nukem 3D released six months earlier. Same thing with Quake 2 - it got obliterated by Half-Life. And even Quake 3 was mowed down by the greatness that Unreal Tournament was. Imo, id only made one big game: Doom. Everything after that was one big lousy attempt to capture past glory.

Point is, they didn't even bother! One of the nice aspects of Duke3d were the guns - it had the generic pistol-shotgun-machine gun-rpg and yet it also had more unique things like the shrink gun (and the expander in atomic edition), laser mines, pipebombs and freezer. Why the hell didn't they add something new, but instead addedd the generic railgun and two machinegun variants (enforces plus at-something)? Why the hell they all look the same? Battleship grey (or rather, spaceship grey) and take almost exactly a quarter of the screen each (well, most of them)?
I love railguns, btw I think Quake 3 did the best rail gun out of any game I've ever played to shot. And the headshots in that were and are still to this very day very awesome. I was so sick at quake 3 when I was like 11-12 yrs old playing it back in 1999... Wait I was born in 86, so technically I would have been about 12-13... I think Idk, i SUCK AT MATH sorry.

No originality? There was nothing like Quake 1 and 2 when they were released and both games were praised reviews wise. Saying Half-Life 1 is better than Quake 2 is just an opinion. Half-Life 1 is built off the foundations of Quake 2 anyways, Valve owes a lot of credit to iD.

And Quake 3 is a great game, I've yet to play a better deathmatch/duel game. You don't know how popular is once was, it was the Black Ops and MW2 back in the day. There are still millions of people active in the Quake community, whereas UT is pretty much dead.

Again, pass the bowl.
