I am a guy who had DN3D the day it came out way back when.

IMHO this game is awful, I would rather play DN3D any day over this. It is just trying to be over the top... I mean really the crowbar joke? Is this Duke or Matt Hazard???

I can excuse the GFX but the AI is laughable, and did anyone see when you kill the flying ship how it breaks apart lol! I know its scripted to make the ramp to go up the hill but it wasn't even a decent attempt, the animation was so broken.

Duke was sweet cause of the weapons I really don't think they modeled them that well from the original game. Just seems they weren't faithful with any aspect of the originals other than ripping off the name, even the voice actor sounds different. The Ripper doesn't even seem like the same gun to me. The shotgun also lost its punch.

This game is nothing like the old ones at all, other than some of the same enemies I didnt see one Pig Cop hit the deck and shoot. Duke had that gritty dark feel to me at least. Like you were in a bad neighborhood with your Ferrari and your Supermodel GF. This just seems like a bunch of randomness just for the sake of being random.

I know we are in the casual gaming world now but regen health come on. They could have at least made you use medpacks or something, can they dumb it down any farther?

I really don't like all the pre-scripted stuff. In the trailers it seemed like alot of the special moves were melee attacks, looks like they are just all scripted.

I hate to say this but IMHO this game really does Duke injustice. I really was looking forward to this game but will leave Duke in my childhood memories where he belongs. This game isn't worthy of his name.
The voice actor for Duke is still Jon St John. He sounds different because A, he's older, and B, the voice capture quality and playback is drastically different from what we had available in 1998.

Personally I dig it, but I'm sure it'll bomb because of how kids are these days.

This is a copy and paste from what I said about the demo in another thread. Didn't realise this one had more posters in it...

Demo wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. I don't know maybe I've just aged a lot. Thing is Duke 3d came out in my young teen years. It was the game that got me addicted to PC gaming period. So for me this game was the most anticipated video game of all time. It's hard to live up to that hype no matter who you are.

Secondly Duke 3d was just the best in it's day so obviously it was loved by many. This day and age though we've all seen and played so many shooters that are beyond what this demo offered so it seems to fall short in my honest opinion.

I'm still buying the game on day 1 b/c I want to play Multiplayer. I have a feeling I'll enjoy that more.

I've got good news. This game's requirements are BS and exaggerated.

Here it is running on my old sig rig, pretty much maxed (I turned special FX off because I hate depth of field/motion blur/film grain etc, also lowered shadows to medium to get the 2-3FPS extra average lol, they make no visual difference anyway), it gets a little laggy in places (hit about 17FPS in a crowded warthog or whatever that canyon area is when I was getting owned, still very playable). Impressions of the demo are pretty good for me, game looks great and gameplay is pretty old school, which I like. I'm very tempted to put in a pre-order, if only they'd include all the old games with this one, it'd make it a lot easier for me to decide to buy it (I never finished Duke Nukem 3D back in the day).

Copy pasta from my rant thread about the demo:

My favorite video game of all time is Duke Nukem 3D. I was playing that game when half of OCN was just a protein strand in a steak their Daddy was about to eat before copulating with their mother. I lived and breathed this game at a very formative time in my life. I just dl'ed and played through the demo of the new Duke Nukem. GG...it is horrible. It took how many years to pump out this crappy game. I feel as though my entire childhood was a lie.

The "shoot everything that moves" part and the generally arcade-ish gameplay. I'm a big fan of those, this is why I still play Painkiller/Necrovision and similar single player games most of the time these days.

Well no offense but if you're such a "1337 gamer", you of all people should know not to jugde a game by its freakin' demo...

Don't like being limited to two weapons at once. The background mountains in the second part were blurry as hell. It was distracting. Other than that, it was pretty much what I expected. By the way, this is a demo that contains gameplay from months back by the look of it. It's footage from those older trailers. Let's wait for the full game before we completely condemn it, huh?

First part was great, imo. Easy as hell, but it was fun. For the people complaining about the scripted events, I'm not sure what the fuss is about. So you have to push a button to kick the eye ball instead of waiting for him to do it in a cutscene. This was much better.

But that doesn't make it old school. Old school is about maze-like levels, medkits, keys, doors that are open by keys, having lots of weapons instead of "drop one, get one" modern style, and yes, it's about shooting everything, but the shoot everything part is literally shoot everything. No NPCs allowed, only monsters. Personally, I think four games sum up the whole old-school genre perfectly: Doom, Duke3d, Blood, Unreal.

It's not just that, the biggest problem is how conveniently all these weapons are placed on the map. I absolutely hate it when the game tries to hold your hand like you're a baby or something. I'm not surprised one bit by DNF though. Always knew it's going to be a foul turd since the day Gearbox picked it up.

The "not having more than two weapons" is the only part where I will agree with you (though this could change in the final game as you might get "upgraded" or something). As for what makes a game old school is pretty subjective: for example, the (in my opinion) dull key-fetching and maze-like levels are not something I would ever bring back because even back in the day when I did play them (Doom for one) they were often gamebreakers for me (I'd get stuck loads of times). Then again, this is like I said before, just a demo, so maybe you're expecting a bit too much to be shown in it. Also I agree with the whole "hand holding" thing being annoying, they should unlimit the amount of ammo carried instead of having NPCs fetch stuff for you and handycap your ammo capacity.
