Can't for the life of me get an internet connection on my ps3

Ok, well it's my friends ps3, he has a netgear router, with the default SSID of Netgear and absolutely no security, no mac filtering or anything. Each device that connects to it gets a static ip address (192.168.1.9 for example) all devices work, but for the life of me I cannot get it to work for the ps3. I just go to connection settings, custom, scan for networks, choose Netgear, no security, IP address and DNS automatic, MTU automatic, UPNP on. I also turned off media sharing because i heard that could be a problem. It acknowledges that it connects to the network but it will NOT assign itself a static IP...what could be wrong? I've done everything possible besides resetting the router(note: they don't know their router login so i can't do anything from there to alleviate the problem. I know the default username/login is admin//password.

Go to your router and hold down the reset button for 30 sec, unplug power while holding button, wait 30 sec, plug power back in... then it is reset. After that try to connect.

Well that is a very last resort, I know how to reset a router but my friends family is convinced something will get messed up if i reset it.

are there custom settings? If so you can back them up. Atleast in my old netgear there was.

Well you see, they forgot/don't know their router login thru a web browser so I can't back them up, but there aren't any custom settings but they don't know much about computers and networking and are just naturally afraid something will fail.

Ok well just reset it...everything will work. If you need to do something later you can but at the moment reset it and reconnect all devices to it.

Have you tried assigning the PS3 an IP rather than letting DHCP handle it?

Well the first one when I left everything automatic and it wouldn't obtain a static IP was just "no connection could be established" but when i just put a random IP hoping for it to work (192.168.1.13) and filled in everything else correctly it says there was a DNS error.
