Buying new Processor Athlon II X4 640?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I currently have the Athlon II X2 215 Amd processor.
It is a 2.7ghz dual core processor and i run it at 3.5ghz stable on a day to day basis, but my use for it has changed and it cannot withstand what im asking of it now.

Now ive been searching for a replacement as it is a great chip, one of my favorite low end chips but is not good enough for what i would like to do.

I found the Athlon II X4 640 for cheap and i was going to buy it but thought id run it past you guys first.

So my question is, how would you guys rate this chip? Good Bad? Any common problems i should know of? How durable, powerful is it compared to what ive got now. And how big of a difference will i get?

Is there any other cpu that is better for same price or less?

Thanks in advance!

I had the 640. It is a decent chip, but is terrible for OC. All propus chips are terrible OCers. Get a Deneb. You can get one for around the same price. Here's one for $100: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103916
BTW, the reason why I got another propus is because I got it for super cheap (like $75). Otherwise, I would have definitely gotten the CPU I linked above.

I also agree with this. At the same price the Phenom II is a much better deal than that Athlon II

Okay, how did the 640 run? compared to other chips.
The link is a phenom II X4, so how much difference is there between the athlon II X4? Also why does it shuck at ocing? I presume the Deneb oc well?

I got the 640 to run 3.525GHz with 1.55Vcore. The stock difference is the L3 cache (propus doesn't have it). The OC difference is pretty drastic. Obviously, it is not a guarantee, but denebs do OC much better than propuses. For example, I would say it is likely that the linked deneb above will OC to the same (if not better) frequency as the 640 even though it is 2.8GHz stock vs. the propus being 3GHz. Don't forget that the deneb has the L3 cache, which makes it faster clock for clock.

Sweet, thank you, also compared to my current cpu? and will it run in my board? Asus m2n78-vm is it compatible? My mobo supports up to 125w and this is 95w so you think if i oc it will it harm anything or push the board too far?

Should be fine running it on that board. 4+1 Powerphase and ASUS brand. TBH, I'd be more worried about your PSU, but it should be fine. Just might not be able to sustain a high OC using cheap PSUs.

Your 215 sounds like a healthy chip, try to find out if IT will unlock to a quad ! (on a mb w/ACC)

That 925 will not clock better than a X4 since it has a locked and lower multi. However with the L3 cache the phenom will perform as well as a couple hundred mhz better clocked x4

Also if you saw my deal thread there is $10 off a x4 940 so the price is $90 shipped
