I currently have this cooler with an added fan on the opposite side.

Heres the thing. A stock CPU cooler brings air down to the CPU which then moves outward from the base, this is how the mosfets get cooled at stock when they don't have heatsinks. When you remove these HSF and put on a tower fan you remove the slight amount of cooling they were getting from the stock, or other HSF of similar design. So that rocketfish is actually hurting your mosfet cooling compared to stock.

I'm not an expect with VRM's and mosfets yet, still learning so I'm not sure about Heatsinks but I think the AMD VRM/Mosfet guide thread lists a few suggestions. Looking at your case I assume theres no side fan blowing air into this area of the mobo, as your side fan would be lower. Heck even if you could pick up one of those dirt cheap fans that screw into a mobo standoffs and can be directed in any direction. Even that would help.

But if you want to OC, you need some kind of air flow along those VRM's and if you want an Extreme OC, you'll want some heatsinks for them.

Hmm okay thanks, the 955 looks as if it comes with a non tower heatsink, but will have to do for now till i can get either noew board, heatsink for mosfets or an aftermarket downwards cooling heatsink.

And arnt thay also locked because they were not good enough or not working properly and didnt make the cut so they locked the cores and sold for less?

Yes, and they also lock up healthy chips too, to meet demands.

I wouldn't buy a mb either without knowing if it would unlock or not. I was referring to having the luxury of a friend with a mb, or even a local member, to check for you. If by chance your were sitting on a healthy quad, you could pick up a used mb for around $50 in the market place...

If your thinking 955 , a member has one for 105 shipped

I will call a local shop i know on monday and see if they have one and if they will let me test it. But people should seriously know already if it can.

Unlocking is a total crap shoot, some do, some don't, just have to flip the switch and find out. Not worth getting hopes too high.

Bummer on being sold, knew it wouldn't last long.

Yes, the little buggers oc nicely.

You should shell out a few more bucks and get a Phenom 955 Black. It's only $15 more assuming you're buying new from Newegg. The Phemom has an unlocked multiplier which means better overclocking.

Also if you saw my deal thread there is $10 off a x4 940 so the price is $90 shipped

The 925 WILL MOST LIKELY OC better than the 640. It is common knowledge that Propus chips are poor overclockers, and Deneb chips are decent overclockers. Look at the AMD 4GHz club and tell me how many Propus chips you see in there.

also athlon chips runs much cool than phenoms ...
All chips are different. If you research on this forum, you will see there are 640 owners who could not get their chips stable above 3.5GHz. I could not get mine stable over 3.525GHz, and needed lots of Vcore. There are two other OCnet members who had the same experience.

Although BE chips are nice, IMO it just makes OC easier. You are not necessarily going to get a higher CPU OC. It will most likely get you a higher CPU/NB and RAM OC, though.
