775 Motherboard Help.

Thread Starter
Early last year I upgraded from a 478 p4 to my e8500 with a board with an agp slot on it so I could use my previous card. The intent was to upgrade to a better board once I got a pcie card. I just recently bought my 5830 and have ordered all of my new hardware which should be here by tomorrow. My original plan for the e8500 was so I could overclock it (I have no use for quads at this time) Now I've kind of fallen out of the loop when it comes to processors and I do understand that my system right now (as new) would not be a good choice in regards to performance vs price. When I bought it however, it was.

On to my issue. I had the wrong motherboard in my cart when I checked out and I ended up having a GIGABYTE GA-P43T-ES3G in my cart instead of the GIGABYTE GA-P45T-ES3G that I had originally planned. The parts will be here tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone had advice on boards.

I want to break the 4.0 mark and I know I cannot do it with a p43 chipset. I have a few options now:

1) Use the board.
2) Use the board until I find a board that is better for OCing.
- If I do replace the board would the one I was originally intending on buying work well? Or am I better off looking for another board (Must be DDR3 compatible even though I know it wont take full advantage of it)
3)Return the current board and wait.

If I do option 2 I will use the p43 coming tomorrow in my future server with a q6600 when I replace it with a better board.

I live in Chicago, IL in the US and I have checked prices of a few of the boards others are using and I cannot justify spending more than ~$150 on the board for this system this late in the socket's lifetime.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions you may have.

its been almost a day and I just put my system together. Everything is running great so far but I'm underclocked. Installing drivers for the mobo right now and I will fix the clock rate at reboot.

Are the lack of answers because there are no boards that meet my requirements? If so I would like to hear that. If I have to downgrade to ddr2 I wouldn't have an issue with that. In about 6 months I'm going to upgrade again to an isystem so the ddr3 won't go to waste

As far as i know, the best OCing chipsets for OCing 775's are P45's. P43's are good tho (at least they don't utterly fail like my G41 mobo)

I'm guessing you could get a decent OC, at least 3.4 GHz.

If you don't need too much power, i'd say keep the board. IMHO, 4 GHz on a simple C2D is not so worth it (a Quad would be a better option) but watch out for the phases of the mobo if you get a quad, you might end up blowing it as quads do need more power to run. The one you have might be good for OCing a C2D, but for a quad, it cannot provide enough juice. My C2D mobo has the same power phases, and i was told i might not be able to OC a quad on it... and it fails at OCing.

So now you have that Gigabyte P43 mobo? And you wanna hit 4GHz with your E8500.

You will need about 420FSB for that. Many P43 mobos can do this.

I have no need for a quad just yet but I am going to buy a q6600 for my server. If I end up needing a quad I can just switch the 2 cpus around.

I'm currently at 3.6 when I put it near 3.8 with a 400 fsb it starts BSoD. I guess I will mess with it a bit more.

Is that p45 board I linked a good board though? I have the 43 version currently and I don't see anything wrong with it thus far.

Ideally I would like to get it at 4.5.

Thanks for the advice!

Honestly man, I would just keep the board you ordered, OC as high as you can, and just save your money until you can jump to a newer socket, I really wouldn't pour any more money into 775.

Thanks for the advice, however I would like to clock this up and even when I do buy a newer socket I will still be using this pc as a HTPC. For 80 dollars I can get a p45 chipset and then put my current board into my server with a quad core which is what I plan to do anyway. None of these parts will go to waste if I upgrade to a newer socket so the money spent is worth it to me.

My question was more if the board I listed would be sufficient for my overclocking needs and if not a request to suggest boards that would be. Sorry if this was unclear.

you will most likely not be able to hit 4.5GHz on your mobo... if you are going to go for a p45 (witch actually do produce substantially higher clocks in most cases) i wouldn't get anything other than the p45-UD3L/R... check out this thread for more info (guy had prity much the same question)

your current mobo should support a Q6600 no problem as long as you dont try to overclock it too high

I know mine won't reach 4.5

The 6600 probably won't be overclocked much at all. Would the p45 motherboard I linked be good for overclocking? I've been trying to find a UD3 but I have had no luck except for $200 refurbished ones. I am going to keep browsing the for sale thread in hopes someone sells one as I cannot yet make a "WANTED" thread.

I am still leaning towards the P45 I posted simply because it has DDR3 (Whcih I already have) and PCIE2.0x16. It doesn't seem like much sense to downgrade to a pcie x16 and DDR2(Won't bottleneck anyway) and then have to buy DDR2 ram.

Thank you for the reply.
