As stated GPT(Guid Partition Table) should fix this. A MBR (Master Boot Record) cannot be over 2TB...

Yes you should initialize a 3TB drive as GPT in Windows Vista/7 64-bit to fully use a 3TB drive. However, outdated SATA drivers or outdated SATA controllers can still limit the drive space seen by the OS. The 800 GB issue on 3TB drives is a common problem.

I'm having some similiar problems and wonder if anyone can shed some light. I have a brand new 3TB drive. It is set to GPT but it will only ever show 700GB of drive space. I already have a 3TB drive working fine in the system and I am running the latest intel RST drivers.

EDIT: I was connecting the drive via USB. Connected it internally via SATA and I could format it to the correct size.
