I think you can save some more money if you buy a seagate 2tb hdd for 64.99
and with that money get her a 570 or a gtx 480.

Instead of that caviar blue, get a spinpoint F3, its a much nicer hdd. As for the ram, you dont want CL9 ram for Phenom IIs. Your much better off with cl7 1333 ram. I would get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231402 for 10 more dollars. Either that or just do your best to get the timings a lot lower.

I need to have a 2 drive setup for the sake of file protection. if something goes wrong with the OS drive I don't want her losing all the projects she's been working on with it.

I'd like to get the spinpoint, but I'm at budget as is. If I want to get a nicer HD or ram, I need to take the cost from another component.

Thanks for the input

1) For the CPU you could go with a phenom 955, the only difference between it and the 970 is a slight decrease in clock speed.

2) I would go with a single samsung spinpoint f3 1TB drive.

3) You could purchase a graphics card from the EVGA b-stock section. These cards are usually like new but they don't come with any of the accessories. This would allow you to fit a gtx 570 into the budget.

4) I would change out the psu for something from a more reliable brand. Such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-018-_-Product

Again, really need to have a 2 HD setup for this, just for redundancy's sake.

I'll check with her about the option of getting some of the parts used.

So far I've been building this under the assumption that it needs to hit $900 before MIR's are factored in. Will see if there's any give, since that PSU would be the same price in the end. That particular Rosewill comes recommend here on OCN, though it does seem to have more DOA issues than some.

OCZ is not a reliable PSU manufacturer. seasonic, corsair, xfx, and antec are the most trusted.

You're right about the brands you listed (I'd add silverstone also ) but from my experience with OCZ I am happy with the products I used. Also, you get a pretty beefy, modular psu for $50 after rebate... sounds pretty good to me
