Sorry, shouldn't have used the word redundant. All OS & Programs will be on HD 1, while all her work files will be on HD 2. I think it's still a reasonable choice, after all the OS drive will always get a heavier workout than a dedicated storage drive would. Since we're not talking about SSD's at the moment, it seems logical to keep her files off the drive that’s doing the brunt of the work, since it's time to failure is going to be faster due to wear and tear. At the very least having her work on a separate drive would ensure that should the OS drive flat out die one day, it doesn't take her work with it.
TL;DR: There's less chance of her being screwed if the storage drive isn't taking as much abuse as the OS drive is. At the very least, when the OS drive fails she might have some warning to replace the storage drive soon too.
That makes sense to me, but if it isn't a logical solution I'd be interested in hearing alternatives. The simple fact is we're at the maximum of the budget currently.

She has an external already. Externals are flaky though...
