Streaming Media issues

Thread Starter
hey guys i didnt know where to put this but i purchased a seagate Free agent Theatre http://www.seagate.com/www/products/...t_theater_plus

I have set my PC to stream media files to this VIA wifi, only problem is that
A) ii can pick up my Movie files but it won't play them, when i select a movie it says loading then after about 4 minutes it says failed.
and
B) my MKV files wont show up.

when i have my portable HDD connected it plays everything ok. Also on the manual it says that all files are compatible (AVI MPEG MP4 MKV etc etc )

my ps3 plays all my media files (except for MKV) which is also connected by WiFi

i am running Windows 7, is there any suggestions on how i can fix this? is there a certain setting that i must have missed?

any heelp would be appreciated.
Thanks

Why didn't you just get this?

WD Lives play .MKV
Are you able to return that Seagate thing? If so, I would.

I'm guessing the issue lies somewhere with your network since it works when you directly attach a HDD. How is your PC setup for streaming? Is it possible to connect it with an ethernet cable to see if it's reading your PC correctly?

Side note: If you want to play mkv on your PS3, use PS3 media server, it will transcode the mkv into a playable format for PS3 on the fly.

What player are you using? Seems like it could be a buffer issue or a network problem

to be honest, im not all that savvy when it comes to networking all i know is made my media folder accessable to stream, which works on my ps3 but doesn't stream on the seagate media player, ill need to try to get my hands on a long LAN cable to test it out. also how does that hane nfs server work? can it run while windows is running, hard to setup?

Try pinging the seagate Free agent Theatre from your computer. (run -> cmd -> ping 192.168.1.2) Replace the IP Address with the theatre's ip address which you should be able to get from your router via 'attached devices' in the menu.
You'll be able to see if it's dropping packets or can't hold the connection. There may be an issue with the seagate's wifi adapter.

Question: When attaching an external HDD directly, can the seagate play the mkv files? or are they not visible at all?

I don't know if you have solved your networking problem yet ,but if not try this . I have WDTV Live and this is how I have to setup the network to stream over Cat6 connection.

Networking Windows 7 for Bluray movies

clk control panel--clk network and internet--clk Network Sharing Center
Clk Home Network--close box.....Now you are back in Network Sharing Center. clk(left side)change advance sharingsettings---turn on network discovery--turn on file and printer sharing--turn offPublic folder sharing--turn off Media streaming (block all) turns it off in options.--use 128 bit encryption---off password protedted sharing---use user accts and passwords to connect to other computers------Save Changes and x out of advanced sharing settings

Do this on the drive containing the BLURAY Movie folder---do not share the root drive---share the folder"Bluray Movies" in the drive----Rt clk Blueray Movie folder--properties--security--advanced....Uncheck box for include inheritable permissions from this objects parent---clk change permissions---clk "add" & type "everyone" in the box---clk check names--clk ok

New box appears Permission entry for bluray movies---check boxes for "allow" Traverse folders---list folders---read attribute---read extender attributes--read permissions.....check box applythese permissions to objrcts containers within this container only---ok---close all boxes

Rt clk Bluray Movie folder--properties --sharing---advanced sharing---check share this folder---clk permissions---allow full control change and read. The box should then have "everyone & administrator in it---apply---ok

To make an additional folder "shared"--rt clk folder---share with--select "specific people". Type in "everyone"---add---then in the box below you will have

Administrator
Denny or your name
everyone
homegroup
clk "share--now the WDTV box will see the new file and play media from it.

already said above..for WDTV...but your setup should be similar
