Electronic Arts Inc. is starting an online service to sell downloadable games directly to consumers, as one of the world's biggest makers of videogames steps up a push to offer more of its wares over the Internet, rather than through discs at stores.

The Redwood City, Calif., software maker plans to unveil the service, called Origin, on Friday.
Steam-like service except with EA titles only of course. Not sure who this is aimed at, it will be very difficult for them to get Steam users to switch.

This Friday, Electronic Arts will unveil its own take on the popular online PC shopfront Steam, with the launch of a service called Origin.

According to a report on the Wall Street Journal, this service will function much like Steam, as a single store and gaming platform on the PC that will let customers "purchase, download and keep track of" their games.

It's even lifting Steam's social features, and will also feature cross-platform notifications that will "let gamers on a variety of devices broadcast messages to online friends when they defeat online opponents or accomplish other gaming goals."

Hope...

A. It's better than the original download manager.
B. Stuff I've previously purchased can be downloaded through it.

... Are you kidding me?

So you are saying that waiting for a pre-order of Battlefield 3 on Steam is pointless?

Good luck to 'em, competition is always good. I just hope they don't try to pull their games from other services. I'd hate to see a future where every big publisher has their own games exclusively on their own digital platform.

Half the reason I even use Steam is because such a large selection is available in one place.

I highly doubt that they'd shoot themselves in the foot by not offering Battlefield 3 on Steam. That being said, if they did actually remove the option of a Steam preorder, I'd buy a physical copy before using this proprietary software.

Like others have said, do not want. Steam does everything I need it to, without being developer specific.
