Newbie - few questions

Thread Starter
I am new to the site and just completed a build but had a few questions about ram and overclocking.

First I will start with my specs:
-AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4ghz BE
-GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
-8GB Corsair Ram
-500GB HDD (will be upgraded to 1TB)
-Radeon 512mb (will be upgraded - used out of older system).
-COOLER MASTER Storm Scout SGC-2000-KKN1-GP Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case (3 fans included - I added an addition 2 - so 5 total plus the one on heat sink).
-Coolmax V600w power
-Windows 7 Home Premium

I hope I am on the right path to a decent system. I do NOT game at all with this system but mainly use it for graphic design, photo editing, etc).

Now for my questions:
1) I am thinking of getting another 8GB of Corsair Ram but not sure if it will be worth the money or will limit me on overclocking.

2) How far can I take this AMD overclocking wise - safely that is?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Cody

16gb ram will limit your over clock some what, and if your running a stock cpu cooler, heat will be your bottle neck any way,but you should be able to get 3.8-4.0 safely and with out much probs on your current specs, you real should fill out your system specs though in your profile so they show up when you post, makes it much easyer for any one to help you.

1) Really no point on 16gb. It will hurt your oc the cpu.
2) Not very far, because of the non-heatsink VRMs and a high possible of blowing your VRM anyway.

Thank you for the quick input. I am looking into some better cooling/heat sink - any suggestions?

Thanks,

CM 212+ seems to be the current price/performance favourite.

It's going to blow hot air right at the unheatsinked mosfets, causing them to overheat and probably fail if overclocked. He's going to need mosfet heatsinks and a fan pointed at them.

Price wise-i would push ypu toward the antec 620-very easy to install, great cooling for the price. And as far as i,m concerned best there is in its class.

I am not completely sure the tower cooler will completely limit the airflow to the vrms, but it does have some logic to it. This cooler is about the coolest lookin one I have seen, but I sure a generic snap-in cooler would work too.

They say its forged, not sure what good forging some soft copper would do, but hey, I sure this will help more than nothing.

That's easily the best VRM heatsink for the price, and yes, hyper 212+ will almost completely limit the VRM airflow. Mine started throttling at 1.358v after I installed it and had to install a fan to blow at it.

It's well known that tower coolers will limit the airflow to your motherboard.
