What many computer users fail to understand is, that, viruses scanner are generally rendered useless when an efficient malware hits their PC, also, malware usually disabled Windows Security (as in all features) as well, which is very nasty indeed!

Malware is significantly more common than viruses today..

As a PC tech I make a lot of money because of malware, not viruses...

Anyone can do an online scan or has some form of protection against viruses, and the bad guys know this. When Vista hit the table with User Account Controls, things changed, and so the bad guys had to make code that worked quickly and undermined the new Windows Security, therefore malware became significantly more prevalent over viruses.

I hope this helps you understand the power of Malware, just remember that malware can also disable Malwarebytes', again, the best way to handle it all is to boot into safe mode, if you have Malwarebytes installed, then you will want to uninstall it and reinstall in Safe Mode, this may give you a chance to remove it, if not, you can try the new beta Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper, it's pretty good...

Personally I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials over Avira, and I've loved Avira for years too, though that doesn't mean you have to throw Avira away, they have a Free Boot Disc which scan for viruses, which is called Avira Rescue, which is very good indeed and it's updated DAILY too! (So just download the latest when you intend to do a boot scan)

Cheers!
