Having trouble setting up MC server (port forward)

Thread Starter
So I'm trying to set up my own server and I've run into the problem with the port forwarding properly.

I have ATT Uverse if it makes any difference (3800 HGV-B router). I've established a static ip for the computer running the server. In the 2Wire web-controls, Ive forward the default port on both TCP and UDP protocols using default time-out values. On the summery page it lists this port as one of the two now open (other was opened a while ago and works fine). However when I run the minecraft jar/exe it returns "Failed to bind to port". When I test with websites it also returns with "port closed".

Ive tried doing this from different computers as well as different ports with no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

edit: sorry if this is in the wrong section

Its might be because ur trying to connect to the server on the same computer its running on. You have to use a differernt IP when you connect locally. Figure out ur local IP and try that.

I can't, Ive tried connecting to it through the local ip and it wont work. Also the biggest question is when I start up the server it says "Failed to bind to port" which makes me think it has something to do with the port not being foward properly.

edit when I was trying to connect locally it was from another computer btw.

You can type 127.0.0.1 or localhost to connect to a server on your LAN, usually works.

Otherwise, maybe try another port, you can also try just putting 80 in the minecraft server.properties file, 80 is a default port for http and doesn't require forwarding. It may cause a conflict but some tutorials recommend it just to check if you are capable of hosting to begin with.

Just a couple suggestions, hope that helps.

Still returns "failed to bind to port" when I run the server trying to use port 80.
I even tried to open it like before, same thing (web sites still say port is closed as well.)

I had the same issue months back setting up mine and it was because of port forwarding. I used a port forwarding software that goes inand does it for you. I couldnt set it up manually at all.

Make sure you have a proper version of minecraft. If you have the free version it wont work.

Ya both versions are 1.6, but I don't think the server even finished setting up properly. I take it that it saying failed to map to port isn't normal.

I don't know how it works with your router, but for my server to connect properly I had to set up port triggering as well.

I've forwarded a port for another program once before on this router and didn't have to do that, is the server program different?
