PC2-6400 RAM running at lower than expected speed??

Hi Guys,

I decided to upgrade the RAM in my laptop from the 2x 1GB PC2-5300 CL5 samsung SODIMMs that came as standard.

I downloaded Crucial memory advisor tool which said I could go to PC2-6400.

In the old RAM i was getting a FSBRAM ratio of 3:5 - so with some sums I managed to work out that since I have a bus speed of 200Mhz and rated FSB of 800Mhz, with the new RAM I should get a ratio of 1:2.

After looking around I baught 2 Corsair 2GB SODIMMs, PC2-6400 400Mhz CL5.

I installed them in my laptop today and for some reason they are running at 333Mhz - I cannot edit the speeds in the BIOS since I have limited access, correct me if I'm wrong but I think its because Acer like other vendors customise the BIOS to their settings and lock it down.

After a few hours of reading around and using various programs to analyse my system (CPU-Z, SIW, PC-Wizard etc etc) I noticed in PC-Wizard under the Mainboard menu, when I click on Chipset (Intel GM965 - however PM965 according to CPU-Z and SIW) it says:

Memory Information
Type :DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300
Frequency :328.8MHz
DRAM/FSB Ratio :5/3
Supported Channels :Dual
ECC Diagnostic :Yes - Disabled
CAS Latency (tCL) :5 clocks
RAS to CAS (tRCD) :5 clocks
RAS Precharge (tRP) :5 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) :15 clocks

but in the memory information it says:

General Information :
M1 (Bank 0 ) :2048MB - SODIMM
M2 (Bank 1 ) :2048MB - SODIMM

Information SPD EEPROM (M1) :
Manufacturer :Corsair
Part Number :VS2GSDS800D2
Serial Number :Unspecified
Type :DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399MHz) - [DDR2-800]
Format :SO-DIMM (67.6 x 3)
Size :2048MB (2 ranks, 8 banks)
Module Buffered :No
Module Registered :No
Module SLi Ready (EPP) :No
Width :64-bit
Error Correction Capability (EC...No
Max. Burst Length :8
Refresh :Reduced (.5x)7.8, Self Refreshµs
Voltage :SSTL 1.8v
Prefetch Buffer :4-bit
Manufacture :2000
Supported Frequencies :266MHz, 400MHz
CAS Latency (tCL) :4 clocks @ 266MHz, 5 clocks @ 400MHz
RAS to CAS (tRCD) :4 clocks @ 266MHz, 5 clocks @ 400MHz
RAS Precharge (tRP) :4 clocks @ 266MHz, 5 clocks @ 400MHz
Cycle Time (tRAS) :12 clocks @ 266MHz, 18 clocks @ 400MHz
Min TRC :16 clocks @ 266MHz, 23 clocks @ 400MHz

I also looked for PM965 documentation on intel's website and that says:

System Memory Support
Supports dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM
One SO-DIMM connector (or memory module) per channel
Two memory channel configurations supported
-Dual channel interleaved
-Dual channel asymmetric
Maximum memory supported: 4GB
Intel Flex Memory Technology support
64-bit wide per channel
Support for DDR2 at 667Mhz and 533Mhz
256-Mb, 512-Mb, and 1-GB memory technologies supported
Support for x8 and x16 devices
Support for DDR2 On-Die Termination (ODT)
Supports partial writes to memory using data masks signals (DM)
Dynamic rank power-down
No support for Fast Chip Select mode
No support for ECC

So is my chipset limiting the speed that the RAM can run at??

I would be greatful if someone could clear this up for me, I just think its abit stupid for my motherboard to support PC2-6400 but the chipset not to?

Thanks
Alex

You have to manually change this "DRAM/FSB Ratio : 5/3"... if your BIOS gives you this option.

Your answer is right in what you've quoted regarding the PM965 chipset:

It doesn't support DDR2-800.

Thanks for the reply - I'm not able to see anything about my ram other than the amount - my BIOS gives me very limited options, which I think is because Acer lock it down?

Yup, that is issue.

You CAN get more performance out of RAM... but it involves modifying and flashing the SPD to tighten the timings.
