Should I buy a 5870 for 160$?

Thread Starter
So I can buy a 5870 for 160$ before tax and shipping.

I have been thinking this over and I cant make a decision.

I game at 1080p rez and currently have a 4850 512mb. Anyway I want to know how long you think a 5870 will last. I think I could use my 4850 for at least a year more.

I figure in a year and a half or so I will be able to get a 6970 for around the same price. I mean I paid 200$ for two 4850's to CF them but I was disappointed in the CF performance so I put one in my dad's computer. But I just can't make a decision weather I should stick it out with a 4850 for a bit longer or go for the 5870 1gb.

So far it really seams that the 69XX cards are really a small improvement, with the 6950 trading blows with the 5870.

Other thing that has me confused is how much 2gb will make a difference at 1080p. I mean would that not future proof you or will the actual GPU just bottleneck future games making 2gb pointless?

So would a 5870 be a solid upgrade that will last a good while compared to how long before the 6970 wont be able to max out games? My other options were just going all out and blowing 370$ on a 6970 or 340$ on a 570, but 160$ is so much cheaper and I won't feel as ripped off in a year when the current cards will be going for half the price.

I mean is anyone else disappointed in the current ATI cards or am I just over thinking this?

I bought my 5850 for 393$ with a 2 years warranty.
Buy this 5870, I saw some for 250$+ brand new.

Absolutely. A single 5870 is more powerful than 2x 4850's. It's gonna be a huge jump in performance at 1080p.

5870 for 160 is a great deal and it is still a beast of a card. If you could get 2 that would tear apart a 580 and keep you satisfied for a long while.

Go for it, thats a good price.

I feel the same way about the 6000 series cards. My 4870 already maxes pretty much every game, when will I actually need a new card?

I would say wait. Our cards will last for another 1-2 years and by then new cards will be light years ahead for the same money.

What is the final price after tax and shipping ?

I'd be fairly tempted to grab another 5850 at that price... Let alone a 5870.

Get on it man!
