Help with speaker upgrade.

Thread Starter

I have around $150, for speakers/upgrade.

Here are a list of upgrades for my (sig rig) im kicking around.

1. Speakers.
2. Sound card ?
3. New keyboard/mouse ...Currently using stock dell keyboard/and razer lachesis
4. Red led case fans x3 for my HAF-X
5. High res monitor. (Not in my price range for this upgrade)
6. 2nd GTX 580. ( also not a option this upgrade)

Speakers

I am not sure wich speakers to go with? The creative T40 / M audio AV30 , both are around a $100.
Or should i just go for it, and get the AV 40?
Also is if i get the $100 speakers, i will have some money left over. I could get a sound card or some case fans.

Question, is a sound card worth it? And would a mid range card work well? Somthing like this.

I really like this card, ( is it worth it?) great price on this one that by the way!

Any experience with these products? All thoughts and opinions welcome. Plan on getting something today.

Your mobo's got a Realtek ALC889. If there aren't any obvious problems with it like noise, then you don't need to get a sound card. But I can't say for sure because I've only used the ALC889 with headphones, not speakers. It could be different. In any case, you should be weary of Creative cards since you have Windows 7. Installing them, while not impossible, can be trouble.

Thanks, and that was my question? Is a sound card even worth it for me? I have heard yes and no.
PS. I have no issues. I have also only used headphones. ( not high end headphones) I guess i just need some good speakers. this is for gaming and music.

I can't really say for sure, in your case, cause you're using speakers, but with headphones I haven't heard a difference between my ALC889 and the STX, Titanium HD, Titanium Fatal1ty Pro, Xonar DG and SIIG Soundwave PCI that I've used.

I find that a lot of people who recommend certain sound cards a) have never actually used them, b) are using them with the wrong settings, and mistaking that for improvement, or c) have succumbed to expectation bias and wouldn't be able to point out the better sound source in a blind test.

Nope. I've never used any because I live in an apartment. It's just headphones for me.

if you are using headphones get the Xonar DG $30. Its got a dolby amp for your cans. Then you still got some left over for a 2.1 setup.

If a subwoofer matters to you, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s offer the best performance in a package for under $150.

It does not have a "dolby amp." It has an amplifier to give your headphones a clean amplified signal. Dolby is a software-based algorithm that affects what you hear. There is not a single piece of hardware on the card that has "dolby" in it, although the logo appears on the card which indicates Dolby has certified the card adheres to its standards.

After having worked in a movie theater for 10 years, I can say that we had a lot of equipment in the projection booth with the Dolby brand on it. Everything is done in hardware to achieve the desired result which "Dolby" puts its name on. We had no software running on a separate PC.
