Just got a new free receiver!

I just got a late 80's, 1988 i believe, Marantz PM-74D stereo integrated amp. This thing is an absolute BEAST. After doing some research it is rated at 100w per channel at 8ohm but was tested at 132w per channel before clipping. And heres the kicker, at 4Ohm it can crank out near 200w per channel and at 2 ohm over 300 I also just saw one of these go on ebay for like $230 so not bad for a free vintage amp!

I bet it still sounds sweet. I found a Rotel 5x125wpc at the local goodwill for nothing.. 1990ish still sounds true.

Nice. That should be plenty of power. My Onkyo claims 130W per channel @ 8ohms and I can only get it to about 80%-85% volume before it simply becomes too loud to even be enjoyable. I don't really see the point of having more power than that unless you have some huge speakers or have a very large room.

I have a very large room right now, 15x30x10. So I plan on getting a nice sized sub to go along with this and the new monitors I have on the way.

You should check out one of these laptop coolers for your receiver.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834991042

I put one ontop of my onkyo and it goes from feeling like it could burst into flames at any second to feeling like it is room temperature. The top of my onkyo gets so hot it is almost too hot to touch after being a high volume for a while. I'm certain this cooler will extend the life of the receiver by keeping everything cool.

Thanks thats not a bad idea actually. After testing this thing for the past day and a half I have noticed that it does feel like it could spontaneously combust at any moment after heavy use. Even idling it get quite warm.

I did take the cover off to dust it out and there is a huge heat sink in there and it would definitely benefit from some air flow.

Just in case you were wondering I power that laptop cooler with this. I also use a 6 foot extension USB cord.

Ahh marantz. I used to have a head unit/radio from the 70's from marantz. By far the BEST unit I've ever had. I really regret letting it get away from me. Only headunit I've ever had that could properly power a 1200wat car sub without an amp. 8 channel surround + 4 channel sub(combining them all would give just about 800watt's for the sub). That thing was f'ing sweet. Yours looks like its the same thing, but about 5-10 yrs newer! Good freebie, very good.

Score for sure! Those late 80's Marantz amps are supposed to be quite good.

Another cooling option is a 120mm case fan wired to a cell phone charger, worked well on my old garbage Sony.
