Steam is the new way to game IMO and it shouldn't bother anyone.
I have game @ home with it's dvd.
I go to my friends place willing to show him my new game.
I forget my game at home.

Now :
Log on steam, download and install the game.

I know, you still have to drive to your friends house but still, you get the point xD
Just hope your friend doesn't have internet the pace of a snail, or it will still be downloading by the time you get back, lol.

On Amazon the price will keep reducing gradually, and a few people will put up their second hand goods. If you want Mass Effect 2 it costs £20 on Steam, on Amazon its 8.99. Disregarding the recent sale, Black Ops is £30 on Steam, but £20 on Amazon.

I could go on. Bring up ANY game and I guarantee there will be at least a £5 difference or more on Amazon. That is why people buy the physical copy, for the lower price. It will never die out unless Steam stop cheating people.
Steam is a decent amount cheaper in the US I believe. Though you are likely correct I guess. However, they have to charge less to compete with the convienence of Steam.

Plus most poeple either buy the game at release price near the release time or wait for it to go on sale from what you can gather from the forums and top 10 selling games when a sale comes up. If I am looking for an old game I might be enlined to look on Amazon, but then I got to wait for shipping(though it should be free), then deal with patching the game my self, and mess around with DRM.

I can't even buy a PC game in the box in a game store any more...they don't sell them in my area. Walmart and Target has some, but it is a limited selection.

No offense but this is a terrible example to promote steam. I mean sitting there waiting for several GBs to download on my friends PC isn't really a fun option.

Though cutting down on CDs in general is nice for some.

I hate steam. Just seems clunky to me and I'd rather just play my game than have to start up steam to play. Updates suck sometimes as well.

You can backup game data or even just pull the file itself then you don't have to redownload everything.

It is a love/hate relationship for me, love auto updates/patches and ease of chat function, then there is the rest of steam...

It shouldn't be required for physical copies of the game, that is just another form of DRM forced upon the buyer. Steam does have a lot of nice features and the client is pretty nice. If they could just make the "offline" mode a bit better then I would have no problems with it.

i don't understand why people get so bent out of shape with steam i have been running it since 2006 and never had 1 single problem and this is with 5 or 6 different PC's. chances are 99% of problems are user error.

I hope you realize that cracking games on steam is hell of a lot easier on steam than any DRM available. All you need is a fake account and the loader. That's it. The loader works for all the games.

I'm not here to bash steam, I have a love hate relationship with it. What people don't like is they're getting charged the same full price for less. Not only that, they don't own the games on steam, it's 100% up to steam if you get to keep your account or not. I got locked out of my steam account for a week due to a flaw in the steam guard protection. Guess what, I didnt' have access to any of my games that required my steam account. Anything ever happens to steam or valve, say good bye to your games.

As someone who's totally about convenience and continuity, I am naturally a Steam lover. I don't have a lot of time to put into my computing, so it's awesome to just be able to back up games x y and z when I'm installing a new hard drive or formatting. Lots of content would simply fall by the wayside if I had to keep track of DVDs and such, so for someone like me on the go a lot, I'll pay extra for a game just to get it on steam.
