pc gaming being forced into steam? - Page 4

This needs to be closed, it's flame bait.

Developers choose to intergrate Steam into their work.
If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Steam offers benifits to the traditional model, 1 of them being piracy. Another one is the ability to keep track of sales better, times when purchased, best time for sales, and statistics on play time for the developers. it also allows the consumer to download there game as many times as they like on as many pcs as they like, without securom or the like.

For having an opinion about digital distribution?

There's pros and cons to it, not everyone is going to share the same opinion, or even experiences.

Yes, Steam is being mandatory to play your games. Its extremely annoying. I can't even play Mafia 2 without an internet connection.

I mean really, who the hell knows that there internet might go down FOR A WEEK. So pretty much you need to be psychic in order to know when you need to turn on offline mode.

I didn't like the fact that Fallout New Vegas (Hard copy) required Steam to play. I've finished the game and I can't sell it because it is tied to my account. Of course that was the developer's intention.

You don't need an internet connection to play games off Steam, there is an offline mode that makes this possible.

How many big games require it? the latest Total war games, Call of duty, Civilization 5 (I think)... ?
and metro 2033, mafia II, fallout new vegas, amongst others

i think it's a good thing, but then again i'm a big fan of steam. it sucks when you have a bad connection though...

Steam is only a benefit once the game becomes so cheap that resell is pointless. Buying a new game with Steamworks is very meh.

The DRM is better than most, but it's still DRM.

Steam is the new way to game IMO and it shouldn't bother anyone.
I have game @ home with it's dvd.
I go to my friends place willing to show him my new game.
...
It bothers me. So does Facebook and Google's privacy policy. *shrug*

99% of ratios are made up on the spot. I've used it on 4 computers. It's been slow and slowed my gaming down by 15-30% on each machine(<---see how I did that). There is no way to play a steam game without it, I should be able to open steam, open the game, then close steam. No dice.

DRM is evil. Steam is the lesser evil. It's a much better way to manage IP, but it's irratating to need to use it. Piracy isn't going away, but with all the things that publishers do to combat it; they make it worse on the people who don't pirate. We all know how the RIAA wanted trillions of dollars from Limewire for *missed* sales. Not to mention the program uses my precious resources when I want to game without issue. Portal 2 was a good stuttering example. Modding is a witch too.

/rant

IMHO. I'm just a poor guy with terrible opinions. I'm up for debate. I use steam because I want to enjoy some games that are impossible to play elsewhere, like Magika. Tis life *shrug*. I'm about to test the multiplayer functions of steam, we'll see how I feel after that .
