thermal repasting and "recovering lost dram size"

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,
I'm new to caring for computers such as dusting, thermal repasting, and i just did a thermal repaste and now when i turn on my computer it starts loading and says:
Code:
Recovering lost DRAM size...
and then reboots and just loops.
I'm not sure how a repasting would affect the ram.
my motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
and my ram is CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM
i also checked the temp of the CPU and it was up pretty high so i think i might've repasted wrong.
please help. confused.gif I'm also not sure if this is the right area to post.
if anything else is needed i will gladly get the info for you.

Hit the user CP and fill in specs. That will help everyone to see what to trouble-shoot. Thinking, usually when I see something like that, I clear the cmos and get back to stock settings and it clears things up.

Nice build you got there. I especially like that you listed Ubuntu before Win7, lol. Alot of these system glitches can be cleared up by " breadboarding". Which is basically pulling everything off the board, setting bios to default, and just adding what you need to boot. Like 1 stick of ram, 1 HDD, a graphics card if you need it. No optical, no nothing extra. Add the others in one by one and you can trouble shoot where the problem starts.

Well it looks like taking the ram out and putting it back in fixed the recovering problem, but it doesn't stay on long because of the failsafe turning off the computer from cpu temps too high. What is the proper way to repaste? I heard use coffee filters and rubbing alcohol to get the old paste off but I'm not sure what to do to put new paste on.

Just use the vertical line method smile.gif
http://www.arcticsilver.com/intel_application_method.html#

By cleaning the processor and HSF with isopropyl alcohol will not make that much of a difference. max 1-2C

Just use a lint free cloth or coffee paper and rub that paste off the proc and HSF. Then apply a vertical line as instructed and place the Heat sink on top.

You can even try putting a rice grain sized drop in the middle.

In your case, I think it more of a seating problem than the paste. Replace the TIM and make sure you properly seat the HEATSINK.

Good luck. smile.gif

Ok, so I did the vertical line method and seated the heatsink well. My computer still shuts off on its own. And I also noticed that it's slower than normal.

have you tried clearing the CMOS? Also try to run a bare bone system, i.e- 1stick of RAM, 1 HDD etc to rule out any problems.

Cleared cmos, seemed to fix the ram problem. Ubuntu runs fine, still shuts down when I try to boot windows.

Does your computer suddenly shut down(like black screen) or does windows normally shutdown?
