What are the best clocks for unlocked 6950 with very low risk?

Thread Starter
I know there are a lot of different threads about unlocking 6950 and I read about 50 of those myself but i'm still not quite sure.

My Card: Reference Sapphire 6950 2gb

1. What gives you the most performance?
I heard clocking memory back to 1250 (6950 stock settings) doesnt affect performance much but makes sure that the Unlock OC is pretty much risk free.

2. Are 920 mhz core clocks good or should I stay with 880 mhz?

3. +20% Power Tuner setting in CCC is needed to not bottleneck your configuration right[aka having higher clocks but getting about same persormanne as stock clocks]?

4. What Bios should I use(since all reference version bioses should be compitable with eachother)?

5. Is there any way to avoid warranty loss if the card breaks [with unlocking ]
5.a.) I read it can happen that the card will not totally break but can get some permanent dmg like artifacts appearing even when restored to stock settings? Is that true, if yes can the manufacturer still find out that I had it unlocked when I apply the original Bioses before I rma it?

6. any more tips for a noob?

Didnt unbox the card yet because my new motherboard has yet to arrive.

Thank you in Advance! [constructive posts get a guaranted +rep! ]

1. My card seems to work best at 900/1400
2. 880 if you want low-risk and complete stability.
3. I don't use CCC, so I can't help you there.
4. Your stock BIOS should be fine.
5. I honestly don't know.
5a. Just unlock the shaders on your own BIOS.
6. Don't jump our overclocks by much to begin with. Go 10mhz at a time until you reach your desired speeds stable. Use afterburner instead of CCC. Don't forget to edit your afterburner cfg file and put in the EULA(google it if you don't know what I'm talking about)

That should be about it. Your BIOS should be fine. If your card is a reference you should have the dual BIOS switch. If anything goes wrong, you should be able to switch back to your original BIOS.

Do NOT flash to a 6970 BIOS.

K.

why are so many ppl unlocking then, if you can just achieve the same by using software? *confused*

You cant. They flash the card to unlock and make the extra "hidden"
shaders usable. More shaders+good clocks=more performance

Unlocking is a small performance increase, very minor. I did it because I could, and because I've got a reference card with a backup bios switch. I would not attempt it if I did not have one.

To the OP, I would keep the card at max CCC clocks honestly. If you want to keep in warranty, use the Racer-X registry tweak to unlock CCC's overclocking limits, throw powertune up to +20%, and overclock to 880-900/1375-1400. I'm on 900/1375 with fine performance, but my card is watercooled. They get loud and hot when overclocked.

there is no safe clocks - card can die running @ stock or overclocked/unlocked. But It might run fine for many years.

I just have the shaders unlocked on the 6950 bios.

clocked at 880/1375 with Trixx and stock voltage 1.1v so I can still have power consumption +20%

Haven't tried to go higher yet but will probably need voltage to go much higher.

Edit: When I tried MSI Afterburner to OC that high it would auto turn off the 20% power consumption because those clocks are higher the AMD Overdrive allows. Trixx seems to bypass that.

ok so many ppl say just unlock shaders and clock to 6970 stock clocks is pretty much risk free, but how can I just unlock without flashing a 6970 bios onto it, google didnt yield any valuable results for me :x (planned first to do it like on this guide http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/159)

1. use ATIwinflash to save the current bios of your card
2. Download this, put in same folder as bios download, rename bios to orig.bin, the batch script will create unlock.bin when you run it
3. make sure bios switch is in 1 position. Use ATIwinflash to load bios back into card
4. reboot, run GPU-Z to see unlocked shaders.

IF any questions or issues, follow the directions on the original TPU article here, just do not load the 6970 bios, load your modded bios made from your original. You may need to run the command line version of the program, which you can find directions to in the article.

BE SURE TO KEEP A COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL BIOS SAFE. Yes, you can download someone else's bios as a backup down the road, but why not keep your own so you know it's the right one.
