It was from the Samsung site:

And yes the newer F4's after December 2010 "should" have the newest frimware on them, but it doesn't hurt to run the flash and be sure.
I have had only 1 that actually needed the new firmware. The other 3 were already there.

This was my first attempt at using a bootable USB as well. It is really simple to do and works like a champ at upgrading the firmware. Just make sure that you only have the F4 drive that you want to flash hooked up to the computer when you do it, although they do say that you should be able to do more than one drive at a time if you want too. I just always try to do only one thing at a time just to be safe.
I'm using the F4's for my server setup as well and another venture into the unknown with that as well.
But on the bright side, I already have over 175 VHS movies converted over and on the server! Only about 150 more to go and my collection will be all digital. WooHoo.

Hi Bill, thanks for confirming that, and the link, very nice of you.

I'm going to see if I can exchange my drive for a new one as I haven't used it yet, will see how that goes as I spend a fortune at the one place I shop at.

If no dice there, I have an old USB drive, which has a separate partition which Windoze reads as a 3.5" floppy so can use that to boot with I guess, it worked when I last installed a Promise IDE controller anyhow..

Man that's a lot of converting!!! I'm saving up for a Canopus converter myself at the moment as we have a lot of stuff on Video 8 tapes and loads of documentaries on Japan on VHS I want to convert and share at some point in the future : )

No problem, your very welcome. If you have any more questions feel free to drop me a PM and I'll see if I can answer them.
The flash is real quick if you would rather do it yourself rather than return the drive. It only takes a few seconds to run and since you are doing it on a totally seperate reboot it has no danger of hurting anything else really.

Yea this is an ongoing process to convert the old VHS stuff over. After I get done with them I have a big library of reel to reel tapes and cassettes that I recorded in the 70's when I was in the Air Force that I want to convert over onto the server as well.
I'm using an Ion VHS player to convert my VHS stuff and it seems to work pretty well. It has a USB cable to hook to the computer and reads the videos in and records them in .mpeg format.
Could be better things but I have a large amount of tapes that are recorded with 2 or 3 movies on them or else they were recorded off TV with commercials and "glitches" on them so this way I can just let the computer record the whole tape and I will use Sony Vegas Movie Studio Pro software later to edit out the junk and redo stuff into seperate movies and shows.
That will be plenty good enough for my needs and to store this stuff for posterity! HA

Good luck with things.
