Should i lap it?

I've heard lapping some coolers might degrade their performance, and better safe than having a shiny doorstop.

I have a Thermalright Ultima 90 paired with one Artic F9. The surface, while more polished than, let's say, an H50/70, it's still a bit rough with some semicircular lines going across the base. I'm just about to do my first lapping on my my C2D (to practice before i move to my i3+H70), and i wanna know if lapping the HS will improve or decrease performance. Even tho the OC on my C2D is very mild, as the PC is an HTPC, i'm aiming for silence (that, and my mobo sucks for OCing, but oh well...)

It depends. I would check the flatness with a straightedge before even considering it. Looks like that's a nickel plated HS. I was going to lap my D14 but it's pretty flat where it mates to the CPU. The thermal conductance of nickel is pretty poor compared to copper but copper will corrode over time degrading it's thermal efficiency. If it's flat, leave it alone.

I just finished lapping my CPU and it's now 8c cooler at idle. Max temps are only about 2c lower but that's what I expected.

It is indeed nickel-plated.

Also, it is a bit convex. I used a straightedge, and yea, there was a bit of bulk in the center, which spreads to, maybe 3-4 mm, and then it goes to the edges.
