Do you have access to a different optical drive? That particular Asus model is not compatible with Windows 7. I also purchased one but prior to my recent build rechecked every component for Win 7-64 compatibility and replaced the exact same drive prior to assembly.

I don't think it will be the ODD making the Whole OS Lag a little, What i think it will be is the HDD. The HDD might stop spinning when the OS doesn't need to load any new Data from it, Then when it needs to load somthing new the OS has to wait (lag) for the drive to spin up in order to access the Data.

I used to have the same issue when i was on a mechanical driver before i upgraded to an SSD boot drive.

@jammo I think you are right about HDD
Some further research showed me that its not transferring at speeds it should be, does it need replacing through RMA?
I cannot seem to locate much on the web. Most of what I have found says to do different things with the caching and indexing but everything recommended was already set that way. I considered SSD but I really needed size to store my large image and audio files and my current 1TB is full so I went for the 2TB which i couldn't really afford in SSD.

Make sure you have the latest drivers and BIOS updates. Do not reinstall OS. It will not help.

You might want to do the following things to properly test the hardware. This might take a day or two though. There is no way to tell if the HDD is bad without properly testing it.

1. Download memtest and put it on the CD or a flash drive. Then restart the PC and boot it from the source. Set the correct RAM spec before running the software. Leave everything else default.
2. Download the SeaTools for DOS and put it on a CD or a flash drive, but the flash drive has to be bootable. Run the advanced test on the disks.

Let us know how it went.

Do you have the hard drives set to never shut off?

Ok there a few things to try:
  • Turn off any features in the BIOS and OS regarding powersaving to stop the HDDs from switching off.
  • Install your OS to your smallest Fastest drive e.g. the 400GB Drive
  • You could also try short stroking the 400GB drive to about 60GB and install your OS and essential programs there for maximum speed.
  • Also defragment your Drives often too to maximise speed

Other than those things i suggested i don't think there is much else you can try.
