2 core fails prime95 after 4 hours - intel q9300

Thread Starter
I just got into overclocking and I wanted to see how far i can push my cpu to a stable point. im running the intel q9300 @ 3.49 GHz with a vcore of 1.4. im running the FSB at 466 x 7.5 and all the other voltages on auto.

After running prime95 for 4+ hours (with the large FFT test), two of the cores have failed (3rd and 4th) but core 1 and 2 are still going now as we speak. Could that be considered stable? should I keep the test running for cores 1 and 2 even though 3 and 4 have failed?

I'm using the corsair H50 for cooling with push pull config with fresh air from back into case. I think the core temps are staying within pretty reasonable range under 100% load: 65, 54, 52, 52. (C)

I would really really like to run my processor at 3.5 GHz flat (i dunno why but it bothers me that its currently at 3.49 right now ) but I would have to increase my FSB to 467 x 7.5. any suggestions on what to do? What to add? what to subtract?

Thanks!!!!

It shouldn't miscalculate anything, so no.

You need to either increase voltage or downclock it

Any cores failing indicates an unstable overclock. I would manually set vcore, fsb And RAM at the least personally. If you don't want to that see if a bit more vcore fixes it for you

Stop prime, and back off the voltage... Anything over 1.36 is considered unsafe. Nice temps but it looks like another poor clocking Q9300

aww man...I was really hoping to get it higher...I was running at 3.48 GHz with vcore @ 1.3875V pretty stable after running prime95 for 9+ hours with no cores failing (large FFT test). I just stopped it myself. Is that considered stable? or should i have kept it running

Also, I wanna know what would happen if i run vcore anything more than 1.36? Im still kinda new to this...

another also...I've seen some people increase the voltage or northbridge and rams...whats the point of that? Thanks!!!

9 hours is good in my opinion. Now just test it with real world stuff like games etc. If you get a BSOD you know it is still slightly unstable.

My understanding was 1.45v was the max safe voltage, 1.36 was just the highest VID possible. If temps are in line, I don't think he'll see any damage.

As to cores failing, it sounds like you have enough vCore, but sounds like you might need to increase your MCH voltage. In order for my q9550 to hit 4.2GHz I need to run my MCH up around 1.4, and I'd be willing to bet yours needs somewhere in the lines of 1.34-1.36 to run. Post this in the EP45 Owner's thread, 20k+ posts with some of the most knowledgable EP45 overclocker's ever to grace god's green earth. Good luck!

EDIT: Also, if those are indeed the RAM sticks you're running, you may need to increase your RAM voltage as well as you're OCing the hell out of this sticks. They run at 800mhz... so 400FSB... you're torturing em close to 1000mhz...

Thanks for the knowledge! I might do some more testing today with higher voltages on the MCH and RAM. I'll also post this in the EP45 thread to see what they say Btw since I'm using these 800 mhz rams, are they the ones thats holding me back?

And if I increase the voltages on these rams, will that take the edge off a little bit? (meaning will that increase more stress on the ram or less?)

And finally, will this be harmful to my ram and decrease the life of it since I'm overclocking them so high?

Well, I'm kinda tentative with overvolting my RAM... so maybe a SMALL bump... (if they're rated for 2.1, maybe 2.14, MAX towards 2.2) and maybe trying manually setting their timings. So if they're rated for 5-5-5-15 maybe jump it to 8-8-8-24 just to relieve alot of their stress.

Any luck in the EP45 owner's thread?
