2 functioning desktops/taskbars with 1 rig?

Thread Starter
This may be a stupid question but is it possible to have 2 seperately functioning desktops/taskbars with the one PC?

I know you cant do it with 1 video card. but maybe 2? or am i just dreaming up something that isnt possible.

The idea is for me to be able to game on one 1080p monitor and have facebook and messengers/web browser on the other? Then simply scroll the mouse over to chat without the need to having to unintentionally minimize the game just for convenience purposes.

Thoughts? Again sorry if this is a stupid question

This is multi-monitor, such as eyefinity for AMD.

I think he's asking for two completely different systems, like having two computers.

Windows can't do it, not sure about if another OS can.

I do something similar to what you want with Display Fusion Pro. It's a very handy program that lets me use my main monitor for most tasks and my secondary monitor for monitoring things or having a webpage open if I'm in a game. You would still have to alt-tab or minimize your game though. And that's a good thing, cause if you just move your mouse over to the one side of your screen and it would just move out of the window it would be very annoying (ex: doing a turn in an FPS would be impossible).

I do that without any special software. Just throw whatever you want to see on the second screen.

Yeah thats what i currently do. Just thought there might of been something else available. Just lately Ive been playing Dirt 3 (40fps plus on my machine - so proud haha) and say someone talks to me on facebook chat ive had to lt tab. But I guess that is just the norm

With Ubuntu you can have multiple desktops (GNOME is the back end I think, pre 11.x?) but it's not like it's 'separate' instances of a kernel/GUI.

I'm pretty sure there was something similar that you could get/download for Windows XP (3D style desktop) but I can't remember what it was/is.

( edit )

I have your solution for you.

1. Download Virtual Box.
2. Install secondary OS (XP, Windows, Ubuntu, whatever you like) in a virtual machine.
3. Run virtual machine along side your game on your second monitor.
4. Assign master control key that swaps mouse movement from host to guest OS. If not possible as is, use AutoHotkey if you can script it to work with it.

With that method you shouldn't have to alt+tab. I think.......

I'm referring to the fully functional taskbar. At the very least, I could never get one working without that program. Also, it let's me do custom screensavers for each monitor.
