Knowledge and communication are the paths to all of these things. The internet has become a vital tool toward these ends.

I fully agree. The internet is the greatest creation of mankind so far.

I find it laughable how something like commiting genocide and denying internet access could both be percieved as violating "human rights". The more non-sense they add to it the more people will start crying out about how their human rights are being violated over trivial things.

This is a good thing for people of the nation's who are part of the UN, but it leads to other pointless crap. Try this scenario, if its against human rights to take away someone's internet access then that means in turn convicted criminals would be having their human rights violated. At present inmates are not allowed access to the internet in British prisons. At least not Cat B and above from what I recall.
Internet is the newest form of free speech, and in other 20 years will be FAR AND AWAY the biggest form of it, free speech is a human right, is it not? Seems pretty logical internet access uncensored SHOULD be a human right.

Every country in the world limits "rights" to criminals so your example is rather stupid.

Are you serious? The US Revolution was largely a result of printed press, and the like.. Common Sense written by Thomas Paine was credited by John Adams thusly, "Without the pen of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in Vain"(I'm quoting from memory, so might be inaccurate, the point is clear though)

With that in mind the Internet is a FAR easier way to disseminate information then printed press could ever have dreamed of. This trend will only become more pronounced.

Oh I agree that the internet can ignite a revolution and unite people much faster that word of mouth or the printed press, even tv for that fact.

For all you people who cannot interpret this law correctly, its stating that its illegal to take away the ability for a person to obtain internet access. Meaning the government can't tell me, or anyone else, that they are not allowed to access the internet.

This law doesn't effect anything, or anyone, except to the people whose country has banned the internet.

I completely agree, it should not be a privilege to come into contact with other people around the world via an electronic device.

If the UN didn't pursue things like this, it would be even more difficult than it already is to establish and maintain any sort of freedom of the press or free speech. Both of these things are integral to the fair and just ruling of any nation no matter what socio-economic political structure you run with. Think of it like enhanced peer pressure; if a medium to small country gets too gung ho about policing thought, they start to feel the pressure of the countries that do back the UN to rectify it.

Not that this will do much for countries like China, but it's a step in the right direction that I'm flabbergasted to see negative commentary about in this forum. I for one enjoy the internet as an anonimized community where I am given open access to information and methods of communication just the same as the next Jo Schmo. It's an incredible result of human ingenuity that this thread only proves is taken for granted more times than not.

So you think:

internet = service

electricity/water = is not a service

So, you are saying my electricity/water bill should be free?
