6 and 8 pin connectors

Thread Starter
If I have a GTX285 that uses 2x6 pin connectors and upgrade to a GTX480 that uses a 6 and 8 pin connector. Can I use the Y-connector that connects 2x6 pin connectors to a single 8 pin and then use another power cable with 2x6 pin connector and plug one into the card so it has it's 8 AND 6 pin connector?

Yep that's the right way to do it.
