how does overclocking ram work? i understand how its done but what preformance gain do you get from it and what are respectable numbers?

RAM runs at a speed (for DDR2, 400Mhz-1066Mhz or slightly more or less) and timings (latency values basically). RAM can be overclocked by increasing the speed or lowering the timing values, which may have different effects depending on the platform.

RAM overclocking usually only provides big gains in RAM-intensive applications such as video editing.
