Need some laptop graphics card help

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm kind of sick of my Macbook struggling to play everything that isn't Minecraft, so I was looking into a new laptop. I really haven't been up-to-date in the laptop graphics department, so I was hoping someone could help lol

Basically, between two laptops I'm looking at, there's the GT 540M, and the GTX 560M, with the 540 costing me quite a bit less (few hundred). I mostly play games like Mass Effect 2, League of Legends, Assassin's Creed, and I hope to get SW:TOR when it comes out. I don't want to break the bank, but the 560 looks like it really does well in the performance department.

Thanks

Well the 560 is the GTX so it is far superior to the GT models like the 540M. I suggest Sager laptops as they are very good in performance and not as expensive as Asus, Alienware, etc. I would try XoticPC.

I've heard good things about Sager. Do you know if the performance difference is drastic, and worth the couple hundred premium?

How do you mean? Compared to Asus? You basically get what you pay for. But please, don't buy an Alienware. The Asus models do come with the GTX standard but if you browse the other Sagers, there should be some GTX or SLI options.

The gtx560 is a lot better than the gt540. You can check out this chart on notebook, it's really useful for notebook graphics card comparisons. The gtx560 comes out 32nd while the gt540 is 87nd...The difference is really significant... Also, for LoL and Assassin's creed you dont need an awesome computer to play ok...As for mass effect 2, you might wanna go with the gtx560, the results will be much better...

Also, xotic pc is a great place to buy laptops from, the prices are good and they have sager laptops which are really good bang for you buck (for laptops obviously...I'd buy a pc for gaming...)

EDIT**: Good deal for the specs you get if you ask me: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8130-...wconfigure=yes

540m

560m

Generally, the 540m is the light gamer good for somewhat high settings gaming @ 720p, and the 560m is the entry level "enthusiast" type card. In desktop terms, they are a GT 440 and GTS 450 respectively.

What is your budget and where are you looking?

Budget will be in the 1.5-2.5k range. I'm looking at Sager and Falcon Northwest atm. I know FNW is a bit pricey but they're a solid company, and good support always goes a long way imo.

Not too big on Asus.

and @ above. I hate alienware, and anything related to Dell. Worse than Apple to me

ninjaedit: that sager is REALLY nice.

If you weren't so against Alienware, I'd say go for this with Crossfire 6970m in your price range.

Xoticpc has been around for a while and this can get you a desktop i7 960 and SLI GTX 560m in your price range. The 560s are just a refresh a little better than the 460s they replace. For something cheaper, there is the Sager NP8150 with a 6970m for $1600 and up.

That's all the interesting performance price points IMO.

How is it that the 6970 was more expensive than SLI 560s? I would imagine the latter to be better.

I think customizing is a NP8150 looks like the best route at this point. Specs are better than the Falcon I had in mind.
