SSD Upgrade Help Needed Please

Thread Starter
I currently have a Vertex 2E 60GB. I am happy with the speed, but would like to go for a 120GB/128GB SSD.

My main uses will be for browsing and gaming. Want the OS to load and be as fast as it can.

It is my understanding that 4k speeds are most important for this. I see everyone going on about the OCZ Vertex 3, but the Crucial M4 has much better 4k reads. Does this not mean a faster OS, faster games loading? What is the point of the large sequential reads and right when they are only fast for bigger file sizes? Not to mention it only works if it is not compressed data.

Those big numbers on a Vertex 3 mean nothing unless you understand what they are and when they do and do not come in use. Some one please explain to me why a Vertex 3 is better than a M4? Also you get 8GB extra on a M4.

I recently upgrade to SandyBridge, so I do have Sata3 by the way.

Thanks in advance

This is a bit empirical, but from different tests and reviews I have noticed a pattern with the Intel 510, which has the same controller as the M4 but with a more sequential-speed oriented firmware. The 510, although far behind the SF and Crucial controllers in Random read/write is quite fast in real-world benches like the PCMark 7 & Vantage, sometimes even fastest overall. Based on this and on many tents of reviews on the web I think there is a minimum number of IOPS @4K that is adequate for a desktop PC as shown by the real-world benches imo ~7000 IOPS.
More IOPS are bring an observable performance boost only for heavy benches designed to separate SSDs and some enterprise or server-like workloads. On a PC the average user isn't likely to notice, so if for the same $/€/£ I could get a good SSD that has some 8% more capacity, I would get the bigger drive.
