6970 Lightning Overclock

Ok, so I recently purchased and received my MSI R6970 Lightning and I have to say its quite a beautiful card. I'm running into problems however in my attempts to overclock it...

If I raise the voltage beyond 1.2v, anything 3D I attempt to run results in a black screen(I Dont even have to touch the clock speed). Even if I leave my core clock at stock 940 and raise the stock voltage to say 1.220v, it results in a black screen. I'm using MSI Afterburner to do so and have enabled unofficial overclocking. My temps so far haven't broken 65C, but I'm just completely stumped on what to do. I've set the Power Limit in CCC to +20% as well but to no avail.

I haven't used AMD since the Radeon 4k's, so maybe I'm doing something wrong...? If so, what do you think it could be?

I, personally, don't use CCC for anything. It's caused conflictions with Afterburner before for me.

That is the ONLY thing coming to mind right now.

Hope you get this resolved.

Put the BIOS switch in the middle position as that will raise the CCC and MSI AB limits significantly. Then reset all the MSI AB settings to default and try again without enabling unofficial overclocking. It is known that MSI AB and CCC do not play well together if that option is enabled.

Doyou have the latest afterburner? 2.20 beta?

Did you come from nvidia and did you properly uninstall the drivers. What version of catalyst are you using? 11.3 and up has worked for me.

Like the previous poster said, you may want to disable any settings changes you've made in ccc. That did cause trouble for me once using 11.3.

My lightning core appears stable up to 970 with no voltage bump. However, the memory will only go to about 1400 on stock volts.

Check with user spct. He had to rma his lightning. He got a bad one which was basically unstable with any overclock.

I did indeed come from Nvidia to AMD. I uninstalled my previous Nvidia drivers and ran driver sweeper to remove the last bits. I'm on 11.5a and I have yet to even attempted overclocking the memory I'm using MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 3 to overclock and the bios switch on my card is in the middle.

Hm weird because my 3 previous 6970 Lightning could do *Edited: 990-1000* core (didn't play with the mem) on 1.2V 100% load 24hrs stable. I was assuming all Lightning are probably best cherry picked cards, but maybe not . Did you disable the CCC overdrive?

It doesn't matter what clock it's at, if the voltage is anything above 1.2v it produces a black screen even on stock clocks lol I tried 960, 970, 980...

How high can you get on stock voltage? Either your card likes crazy low voltage and is a super golden gpu that doesn't know it ( extremely unlikely) or it's a dud as compared to most lightnings. Again, check with user Spct. He had a dud, RMA'd and got a much better card. BTW, what are you doing to test stability? Are you overclocking your cpu and are you sure the cpu is totally stable? I'd definitely disable any settings in ccc and play with AB settings for at least a day or two. Maybe play with the dip switches on the card. Some of them disable safety measures to keep voltage in check. Maybe yours are set screwed. I haven't messed with mine. I'm sure that if you google for the settings, there has to be something out there.

About 970 or so on stock voltage @ 1.175v.. Since FurMark seems to throttle from PowerTune I've been running a few loops of 3DMark 11 haha
