Tablet vs Cintiq

Thread Starter
Ok, this might be off topic but not really...

I have been looking at a Cintiq for quite some time now and now have the funds to take the dive. I would feel much more comfortable with getting the
smaller one because it is less of a chunk to dump at one time but a lot of people have said that if getting the smaller one, it's a better deal to get a tablet PC.

Any recommendations on which way to go? I love the idea of the larger screen and I could do that but if a tablet can run Photoshop and similar programs and still offer the resolution and color that a Cintiq can for 10% of the price, I would probably go that direction.

Thank you all in advance.

The problem with a Cintiq is that it's huge and heavy leaving you stationary . A tablet is good but the drawing space on most tablets aren't very large. You have to work with whatever your tablet screen has to offer. Most slightly larger Tablet PC's with active Wacom digitizers are thicker and a bit clunky so when you lay it on a desk to draw it's like putting your hand on top of a book and not on top of a piece of paper.

A Tablet PC will be mobile, if you don't ever consider doing any mobile work drawing or whatever then the Cintiq would probably be much better. A decent well geared Tablet PC is about $1300 up to $2000 or more. If you're willing to spend close to $2000 I would just get the Cintiq and forget about Tablet PC's.

If you think you will lean towards a Tablet PC then I recommend Lenovo's tablets. They're light and thin when you set it on the table they don't feel like a brick or a book. AFAIK, you're not going to find very many Tablet PC's in the market anymore. There are very few choices to choose from. HP Slate 500 is not powerful enough, HP Touchsmart tm2 uses ULV processors. Seems like Toshiba doesn't offer their line of Tablet convertibles anymore. Gateway is defunct in their Tablet PC department, the Dell XT2 is overpriced for its hardware. A majority of tablet slates use ULV processors so that's out of the question. Fujitsu does have plenty of powerful tablet convertibles but price maybe an issue.

I'd recommend getting a Lenovo because it is a bit cheaper but you will have to live with the screen size and hardware it comes with forever. Otherwise save up to get a Cintiq unless you really want a Fujitsu but at the $1700 mark I'd just get a Cintiq 21ux.

So, the Cintiq 21ux is about like having a 21" monitor dragging around?
I was looking to be mobile with it mainly because of how randomly I draw but I figured I would just hook it up to my laptop when needed...
Thank you so much for your help. Gives me more to think about. smile.gif

Yes, the Cintiq 21ux is about 18lbs. Not good for lugging around. If you're aiming for mobile you're better off with a Lenovo tablet. But for serious drawing 21ux is a lot better.

For serious drawing you should buy some 180gsm "real" estate, not a toy.
