Recover a dead HDD

Thread Starter
SO my step dad had an old HP from 06' before his current computer, he wanted the HDD out of his old one so he can get his pictures off of it, but its dead, and if that wasnt bad enough before it died we couldnt even read it because windows told us that we had to format it before we used it.
The disk has 2 partitions, H and G, H is the Recovery partition which for some reason is still intact (when the drive works) but G wont let me access it because it needs to be formatted. I put the HDD in the freezer for about 30m and when i put it in the comp it ran and let me access H but as soon as i put it in it told me i need to format drive G, but the space on drive G appears in disk managment, so anyone have any idea what i can do to access the files without a format?

Please let me know how it works, or if you figure out some other way, as I have the same issue on one of my HDDs.

Before you try any crazy things, just put it in a couple of plastic ziplock bags, and leave it in the freezer for 20m or so.

Its in my comp and win7 installed the drivers but now i cant open dskmgmnt because its crashing it i think.

EDIT - I think its working, its about 95% loaded )drive G) and ill see what happens when it loads 100%, what you need to do is keep the drive as cold as possible, so i opened my case and put a fan on it (floor fan)

That is the LAST thing you should do, while freezing your drive could work....
It could also kill your drive.

Try another distro, Ubuntu etc. Throw it on a USB drive.

disassemble and put the physical disk in a like enclosure? I have done that a few times, its hard, and there is a 98% chance of total failure, but if the mechanical operation of the drive has failed, what choice do you have?

off topic, but

Recovery is a fun program that can help you get level 1 deleted files back considering on a spin drive the os usually only deletes the file header, the file still exists. Usually when a HD is in this state, tools of this nature end up being useful. You could quick format the drive then run recovery to access the existing file tree. Last resort only though as you will have deleted the files.
