6970cfx for 1080p?

complete waste IMO. there's barely anything you can't max out to begin with, so a second is not going to justify the money you spend on it. A 2500k/good p67 mobo would be a better investment, I'd say.

It'll help your games marginally but your day to day tasks greatly. a second 6970 won't do much of anything but cause more heat and it could even get bottlenecked by your CPU unless you have it clocked high enough.

i have noticed a marked improvement going from a 955 @ 4ghz to a i7-2600k at 5ghz. In all ways, gaming, ecoding, general tasks.

Whether thats worth the money right now is upto you will new platforms around the corner

I guess I should have been specific being as I plan on going eyefinity soon enough. However I see your point. I guess I'm stuck between waiting on Bulldozer and getting a 2500/2600k =/

edit: and to be fair, metro 2033,witcher 2, crysis 1/crysis 2, benchmarks benefit greatly from xfire 6970

also what cooling socket do the 2500/2600k use? I do plan on watercooling as well

LGA 1155/1156

you can use 1156 coolers on 1155 boards, they have the same mounting holes.

Take it coming from a Sandy Bridge user: wait for AMD Bulldozer before you make a purchase. It's not about brands. It's about getting the most performance in your price range and at the moment Intel has no competition in the 180$+ CPU market.

If you really want to upgrade now, I can honestly say my 965BE was garbage compared to this 2500k although I have high hopes for AMD Bulldozer.

Remember that the benchmarks laying around is the phenom at 3,4ghz and 2600k at 3,4ghz, now.. I guess you can get the phenom stable at 4 ghz easily, I had mine up to 4,2, but the 2600k easily goes up to 5, so there'll be an even bigger jump than the benches show.

Then again, wait for bulldozer, you can stick with the 965 for a little longer, if the bulldozer disappoints, which I'm pretty sure it will, heck, get a 2600k (or 2500k if you're only gaming).

I upgraded from a 965 @ 4 ghz to a 2500k recently. Worth. Every. Penny.

I went from a Phenom II 920 @ 3.72 to the 2500k. There is no comparison. Almost all of my games received a decent fps boost as well

It'll give better performance, but going crossfire will give an even higher increase in FPS.
To say whether it's "worth it" is completely up to you. It will be much faster in CPU-intensive applications, but in most games or regular PC user the speed increase will (in my opinion) not justify the new mobo/CPU cost.

Personally, I'm waiting for BD, if just to see fair comparisons.

It is a huge boost in preformance but with your current CPU and GPU you will already be getting a constant 60 FPS in games, so why change?
Even for editing and 3D work your current CPU will do fine, I would wait a week (hopefully) to see what bulldozer has to offer, I think the price point on those will be comparable to sandy bridge.
