5970 issues?

Hey guys! I am in a sort of predicament. A while ago I sold my Asus 5970 to a client that later reported it was faulty and it didn't work. As I recollect it worked perfectly, but he turned it back in and I wanted to test it out to see if it worked or not. I turn off my PC, turn of PSU and ground myself, take out my GTX 580 and replace it with the 5970, and plug everything back in and soon enough it POSTs and I see the windows screen!. So it obviously can boot up, but the issue I am having is the following.....

I wanted to prove to the guy that the card was indeed working, I planned on taking a picture of the "Device Manager" with the 5970 highlighted under "Display Adapters" to confirm that it DID WORK. But the problem was that when I went into Device Manager, it only showed up as a Standard VGA adapter. So I figured I had to install the drivers for the card before I did that. So I go to AMD's website, get the drivers (not the CC Suite, just the bare bone drivers) and install them. I reboot the system, but then the system hangs at when it Starts up Windows! The four orbs make the Windows Logo, and it just stays there! I had to plug back in my 580 for the System to actually boot up.

So what is the problem here? I didn't uninstall the NVidia drivers but that isn't a issue..... right?

hmm.. it could be a conflict with the drivers. Try using ccleaner in safe mode and erase all traces of previous vga drivers and proceed to try and reinstall.

You cant have NVIDIA and ATI drivers on the same system and not run into issues. Uninstall NVIDIA and ATI drivers, run a driver cleaner, reboot, and then install the ATI drivers.

Surprisely enough, I had this happen once with a faulty PCI-E slot. The card worked perfectly until drivers were installed. So it could definitely be hardware related too.

Also, this is why you get shipping insurance. If you pay $4-5 to get the item insuranced by UPS or FedEx, and then it doesn't work when the customer gets it.. you file a claim with the shipping company, and they buy you a new one or give you money. Who knows if the customer broke the card himself, or if it was damaged in shipping. I offer a zero return policy when selling to users because many users don't handle things correctly then expect me to refund them when they break something.

I hope you documented the serial numbers on the original card. He might be trying to swap his old messed up card for the one you sold him.

This is why I document video cards that I sell with video. I document the serial numbers with video and I document the card working in a test bench with video. I then convert that video to flv format and upload it to youtube for the world to see.

People are much less likely to have "user error" when they know there is evidence the produt you sold works that they will have trouble refuting in small claims court.

Seriously, this saved my butt. I sold a GTX 295 on eBay a few years ago for about $300. I documented the serial numbers and the fact that it works with video which was uploaded to youtube. Guy recieves it, says it is broken. Forces a refund. Sends me back a dead GTX 295 WITH DIFFERENT SERIAL NUMBERS THAN WERE DOCUMENTED IN THE VIDEO. I shot a video of the UPS guy opening the box and READING those serial numbers. After a few days of arguing with the claims department at eBay I got my money back. First they said the video didn't matter. When I said it would matter at small claims court and that I would need to take a statement from claims supervisor at eBay, they suddenly had a change of heart.

Luckily I did, Serial Numbers match so it is luckily the same card. So this guy didn't try to mess with me. I am going to try to uninstall every Nvidia driver remnant I have with Driver Sweeper and CCleaner, and than do this (luckily I have a backup in case something goes wrong)
