Bluetooth headset for phone etc...

Thread Starter

I just received a $50 amazon gift card (wuhoo) and I think I decided I want to try my hand yet again at a bluetooth headset. I've been reading some reviews on amazon for a little while now but I figured you all would know as well or better than anybody. I should note audio quality for music is not really a priority. I mean I would consider stereo music playing a bonus but it is not essential or a deal breaker. I don't know that I will try and pair this with my PC and listen to music or try to communicate with people in games etc.

I actually posted this in the portables/phones/pocket pc forum but didn't get any replies. I don't know if I posted wrong, everybody is out for the weekend or what. Anyway I hope you'll forgive me for posting it here as well as I kind of wanted to purchase something by tomorrow.

Extra details in case they come up:

  • This headset would be used with an HTC Droid Incredible
  • Pretty much exlcusively used in my car which seems to have a relatively loud ambient noise factor (it's a '96, I deal)
  • I do not have a beard or where glasses
  • If the price didn't exceed $70/$80 that would ideal
  • I've been buying a new pair ~$5 head phones every couple months up until now (since they seem to break irregardless of how much they cost anyway) so my standards for sound quality in music and non-phone call applications are not very high
  • The kind of head set that requires some how sticking in the ear hole do not work for me. The ones in other words.

Here are the most important factors:
  • Must be able to stay consistently connected to my phone
  • Must be legal to where whilst driving in the car in California
  • Must be able to hear the caller and caller hear me

Bonus stuff that would be nice but perhaps not required:
  • Covers both ears, supports playing stereo music whilst not on calls
  • Long battery life
  • Can be worn while wearing a bicycle helmet
  • I work in a noisy data center and being able to listen to music AND answer the phone wirelessly while the phone sits idle and charges would be REALLY nice!!
  • If it could also be paired with my PC for audio and voice chatting this would also be cool.
  • Being able to pair it to both my Android and my work blackberry so I could receive calls from either would be simply fantastic.

I think I have narrowed it down to the following:
The because I think they would fit my ears pretty well so I could hear music/people and people could hear me.

The because it looks like it covers the whole ear and four stars with 800+ reviews is hard to argue with although I have had really bad luck with moto stuff in the past.

The because the idea of being able to replace the head phone portion is appealing. I do have concerns about the mic picking me up in noisy environments like my car and the datacenter I work in. I think it would work out the most convenient in the car assuming the mic could pick me up.

The because like the motorokr it appears to fit into the ears and it comes with a bluetooth dongle which I could use with other devices like old MP3 players and my TV.

Any other suggestions? Anything I should watch out for or avoid about the ones mentioned above?

S9-HD.
Love mine. Had the original S9's and now the S9-HD's and they are great.
Though personally I would never drive with them on.

Thank you for replying

I am finding this quite frustrating. For every five star "these are super-great" review of any given BT headset there's a matching "these are junk" and "do not work".

So I think what I will probably do is buy two different devices: one for the car, one for everything else. It will be more money than i wanted to spend but I'm not seeing a lot of choice here.

For the car it will probably be the Jabra clipper. I'll just cut off one of the two ear buds on either the pair it comes with or a pair I already have and hopefully that will work for the car. And possibly while riding the bike.

For walking and at work (did I mention it's noisy?) I will most likely buy the moto s9s or I don't if it's better or not but I guess there's an S10 model now.

The only pair I could find on amazon that seems to come remotely close to universally acclaimed reviews are the

which only come in at a mere $200.

Why I'm really conflicted is around the fear that perhaps I will buy these S9s, find they don't quite fit my needs for some reason and then end up buying the Nokias at a later date anyway. Then I'd be out the cost of the S9s and the Nokias.

So about the S9s...do work well while say walking long distances/jogging/bicycling would you happen to know? There were a lot of comments on amazon about these headsets not working well out doors...

You mentioned the S10's. I haven't read the greatest things about them...
I thought about them myself, but I decided to go with the S9-HD's since I loved the original S9's until someone decided to run them over... lol

The S9-HD's though give a lot more bass than the S9's did. Since I listen to a lot of dubstep, so it's not really a bother to me.

It's interesting that you say they don't work outdoors. I use my phone for everything and pair it with the S9's when I go out on a run. But the problem I have found is that since the transmitter is on the back of your neck on the S9's, you may have problems with your phone being in your front pocket. I have a arm band that I use when I go running, so I haven't had much problem with that. But when I go mow the grass, it's in my front pocket and there is sometimes where it'll lose a connection for a split second. It's rather annoying.

It's funny because, that'll happen when it's in my front pocket. But I can leave my phone in my room and walk downstairs and still be listening to music just fine while paired. It's a little quirky and not sure why that is the case. lol

Alright I'm once again swinging back towards the S9s...have to buy an armband for my phone I guess for when I'm walking or bike riding but I can live with that.

Once question I do have is can these S9s be paired with more than one phone at once? I have a feeling that's kind of a specialty feature or one that doesn't work well anyway but it happens to be something I need...

If the amazon reviewers are any indicator apparently the RF signals have something to "bounce off of" while indoors but not whilst out doors. So some kind of relatively line-of-sit is necessary. I don't know enough about BT or RF to know how accurate that is.

TBH, I don't think they can be paired to more than one device.
I mean, I haven't tried it so I don't know for sure.

You could simply put your phone in your rear pocket while your walking or when biking. I know some bikes have a little pouch below the seat. That would probably work. I wouldn't know personally though.

I tried looking for a armband similar to mine on Amazon, but couldn't find it. But then again, a Marine buddy of mine gave me his so I don't know where he got it lol.

I some how found this review from 2008 that seems to explain the trick to pair with phone+pc at least. I will just have to try that method.

Thanks again for all your help

In case mbudden or anybody else wanted to know what I ended up doing:

I some how rationalized buying this

.

My thought process was that I would end up going through several models of motorola, replacing each set with a different set after 3 or 4 months in disgust then do the same for several different plantronics models...resulting in 12 to 18 months in my buying the expensive pair anyway because of the frustration with all those affordable pairs. Which in total would cost well more than these expensive Nokias and I'd have a pile of unused BT headsets to show for it.

So I thought I would cut all that out and just go directly to the expensive, nearly universally praised BT headset from the outset. And that it has the range and pairing abilities I was looking for doesn't hurt.

So my by convulated logic I've actually saved money by getting this expensive headset.

Anyway I will probably post something in a month or two and let everybody know if they were worth it.
