I don't think it's a terribly meaningful comparison in the article, but at least make a valid point.
Edit: Check the temperature in hell. I think I just indirectly defended Apple.
Actually of the things he mentioned, Microsoft has only released a competitor for int he form of Zune. Which, initially was a decent product, and then the ZuneHD which was a great product, but fell on its face due to poor marketing and the general agreement that mp3 players are being marginalized in favor of phones. It was too late to the game. although I guess they both make peripherals, but I'd wager microsoft is equally if not more successful in that market than apple (kinda depends on which device's peripherals you're talking about).
Microsoft and apple only directly compete in software and operating systems, which is pretty much what Microsoft IS, where apple is more hardware oriented (although they certainly have a robust software/OS element). Microsoft crushes apple in the PC market, a fact that apple counters with in-house computer designs and selling them for a massive markup, and Apple crushes Microsoft in the Mobile world, but microsoft is far from down and out WinMo7 is still young, but exceptionally promising. But even though their "classic" rivals they've largely diversified away from each other.
Their names both show up in a number of markets, but they tend to approach those markets in very different ways.
