Interesting win7 home premium problem: computer boots fine, programs won't start

Thread Starter
My friend recently got a new computer from ibuypower. It has worked fine until a few months ago.

Win 7 home premium 64bit
AMD 64 x4 965
4gb ram
ati 5700

The problem starts after the computer has been booted.
Once on the desktop, when opening a program it will show up in taskmanager as a process but it will only have around 104-108kb used and won't actually do anything. Tested this with firefox and malwarebytes. I can't seem get either of them to start. I'm trying to avoid reinstalling windows because it was a bought PC.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

edit: these programs work in safe mode, just tested.

You probably have a virus. I had a boot virus that affected My other drive exactly the way you described it. If you already have an AV. check for viruses if none. Download Microsoft security essentials. if that all fails. they this This did the trick for me. I would use Kaspersky last since it takes Forever to finish.

Try creating a new account and see if the programs run correctly in that account. If they do, then something is wrong with the user account.
