Complete Gaming Rig ~$500 Budget

Thread Starter
Friend of mine asked me to get a list of parts for a gaming rig he would like to have built. He will use it for a variety of games some older some new. Mostly source type games if I had to guess. He has a budget of ~$500 and needs everything. I told him to look locally at some places for the LCD, and KB/mouse since it would be cheaper. He doesn't need anything special for peripherals so focusing more on the tower itself. Since he only wants to spend around $500 for everything might be kinda hard to get all of it. I have a older HP LCD I can give him and suggested check out EPC(local used parts dealer) for a generic KB/Mouse. He games and will use it for internet so wont need any gaming peripheral just something that works.

I am going with a AMD based rig since its far better on price then Intel would be. He doesn't care about highest FPS as long as its playable.

Here is some hardware ideas I gathered so far:
CPU- Athlon II X2 or X3
MB- Cheap AM2+/AM3 M-ATX/ATX
RAM- 4GB DDR2/DDR3
GFX Card- ???
Hard Drive- WD 500GB SATA
PSU- 400-500W Dependable Unit(Thinking of future upgrades here)
Case- Xigmatek ASGARD II $29.99(After MIR on Newegg)
OS- Windows 7 Home x64(~$100 good chunk of budget here)

Looking on Newegg and Ebay currently for stuff to fit the budget. Will check out NCIX US and Microcenter as well to see if there is any better deals. Not sure on what PSU and video card would fit this rig best since he wants to play games but is on a tight budget. PSU is important to me since its the heart of the rig and do not want it to fail on him.

Let me know what you guys think and if there are any good deals to fit this budget.

Thanks in advance!

come's to 440$ and the rest + a bit extra can be used for OS or could be acquired using other means.

i would go for this. It has a RAID 0 configuration. Any respectable gamer has at least RAID 0 setup on their PC. The power supply is also great for a card that requires 2x 6pin connectors.

Best option in my opinion. You wont get anything worth calling a gaming computer for under $500 bux really. Id save up to get a GTX 460 if I were your friend.

Is he willing to go used all the way? I've got an Athlon II X2/ GTX 460 / 4GB DDR3 / Win 7 Professional x64 (Legitimate copy + serial) complete build that I ended up not using. Feel free to drop me a PM if interested.

@ theonedub & OP

I would suggest going for the GTX 460, 4GB DDR3 from theones dub. Everything else should be bought new. Maybe even buy used power supply. A case is also very personal, if anything is personal, it's the case.

I'd buy the used GPU and RAM.

Saw that you said PSU was important- PSU in my build would be either an Antec Earthwatts 430D or a Corsair CX500- depending on final $.

Sent you a PM and dont think he would mind used as long as it works.

He ins't too particular when it comes to hardware really since he is using a netbook right now that is seriously underpowered. As far as the budget goes I am sure if I can get most of it together so he can at least do some stuff upgrading later wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks to all for suggestions will look more into you listed parts and see how it goes and what he wants to do later tonight.

EDIT: Not gonna do RAID 0 he has no idea what that even is and a regular HDD will boot up fast enough for him with above listed hardware and Win 7.

What's that suppose to mean? That very fast read/write rates and less load times in game aren't good? That the hard drive is the biggest bottleneck in a gaming PC? That I didn't suggest an SSD because it would go far above budget?
