According to 2K Games, XCOM pits Special Agent William Carter and his veteran team against the threat of human extinction. "But every enemy is an opportunity – players will strike surgically against the alien menace, capture their technology, and by the science of desperation – turn the invaders’ weapons against them. Armed with these lethal new tools of war, players will command their squad on XCOM’s front lines: Main Street, USA."

Hell yes I can't wait to get a blaster launcher and fry some mutons, snakemen, floaters, and chryssalids. This is far overdue and best not suck. Steam has the original X-COM: UFO DEFENSE and I started playing it in anticipation.

It's certainly not what XCOM fans want, but I'm interested nonetheless.

A FPS that isn't spewing gritty realism, set during a war or focused on multiplayer? Sign me up.

Are these not the same screens from a million years ago, back when XCOM was announced an FPS about a million years ago?

No, they're new screens from the E3 2011 trailer. It's also a confirmation that the game will be multiplatform, rather than an Xbox 360 exclusive as previously announced.

Hmm, I absolutely love that tis game is coming back.....dislike that it's going away from its roots as a sim/turn based combat

This is not xcom UFO defence. Why tarnish one of the greatest PC games ever with what is clearly not anything the fans of xcom would ever want. Fail.

What is it with you guys and prematurely calling fail, ALL THE TIME!?!? Its like you guys are in a competition to call FIRST but as many times as possible. Its quite annoying.

1. Its not tarnishing anything yet. Jut be happy its coming back

2. X-com, syndicate and fallout were the pinnacle of pc turn-based-squad-simulation-combat, but that was a decade +. You can't be mad at devs trying to innovate and experiment. part ofme agrees with you but I would stop FAR short of calling fail. Especialy since the game isn't even out yet.

3. Don't try to fake credibility by assuming that you speak for, or have the same opinion of other fans.

Agreed that this is not good for X-com. They are just capitalizing off the name to get extra credibility. The gallop brothers even said they think it is a terrible idea, AND ITS THEIR IP. Well I guess it isn't theirs since they don't own it anymore. It is their creation though. Sad that corporate game companies can just come in and steamroll a legend.

Man, I'm EXTREMELY happy that they aren't trying to emulate the earlier X-Com games. UFO Defense and Terror From The Deep are a perfect example as to why that's a silly idea. Terror From The Deep, the second X-Com game, was pretty much a re-skin of the first game. Apocalypse, the third X-Com game, brought some new, interesting, elements into the game, and thus was a whole lot better than the second.

If they can bring some really new, interesting elements to the game, whilst still keeping the same basic loadout of game theory, they could have a good game on their hands. Whoo!
