Disk drive space issue

Thread Starter
My friend's computer is having space problems. For some reason, the true disk capacity is not show and can't be used, but the partition in disk manager is show to be smaller.

How do I fix this?>?

Sorry, should have clarified..
The top shows the actual space which I can actually use and see, which is ~130GB
But the bottom shows the true space which the system sees, which is ~270GB
That is the problem.

The 18.5 gb partition is probably a system restore feature. I take it this is a laptop? Also if they advertise a 400gb drive you will never get 400gb due to hard drive manufactures stating a gb as 1000mb when in actual fact and windows will show it's really 1024mb.

Assuming your drive is a 320GB HDD, you are missing no space.

Sorry, should have clarified.. Look at the top, the C: partition is shown as 300~GB, but on the top, in the Acer C drive, it only shows like half of that. That is the problem. I don't care about the little space missing after formatting, I care about the huge amount of space which is unusable in the partition.

Yea that is odd, it shows almost half the space as usable. Run check disk and see if it fixes it, I think there is a way to force it, one second.

Edit: Type this into CMD

chkdsk /f /r C:

It doesn't have that option, it only has shrink volume.

If it is a Host Protected Area, don't mess with it in Windows. Just hold on... Okay, yeah. I think I used MHDD on a bootable Fat32 flash drive. No, the program I use to wipe out Host Protected Areas is HDAT2. I just ran the program and selected the drive and chose the options that allowed me to remove the HPA. You can't do this within windows. Host Protected Area is NOT the same as those little partitions with restore information that HP and Dell use, it is more sophisticated. Usually it is an entire mirrored partition.

It looks like there is a Host Protected Area. This is a partition that windows cannot see. Usually it is OEM software placed there by the manufacturer. However, some people use special software to place private data on the Host Protected Area so that law enforcement does not find it. I've got software on one of my flash drives that I've used to wipe that crap out to get back the entire disk. I'll go look and see if I can find it.

The thing is, though, he had it before. It was fine like 3 weeks ago, with the full 300GB space, but I don't really know what he did to make it like this.
