Bottleneck - The Mathmatical Method

I will state in the first line of this thread that I do not know the answer yet.

Can you guys help me figure out a Rule of thumb method to determine when a bottleneck happens. Its a pretty common sense deal in my books, but there has to be a facts/numbers based approach that can be used to answer the most 2nd most common question on OCN (besides "When is Bulldozer coming out?")

Example of what I want to see....

Maybe a few categories to start the conversation, because what someone does with the computer may change the result. A folder using 4 GTX 480's could probably get buy with a pentium 4 processor, all they need is the cards running and something to do the basic instruction sets for the OS and the program interface. I think for Gaming and Rendering/Video Encoding would be the main things one would look at.

-Gaming
-Encoding


GTX 400

A single GTX400 Series (460,465,470,480,460x2) seems to be pretty well match to a phenom II - without a bottle neck.

A sli'ed Pair of the GTX 460,465, 470 seem to be the sweet spot to match a 4ghz Phenom II.

sli'ed GTX 480's need an i5 quad or greater to experience sweet spot operation.

How would the Athalon II's, Athalon AM2+, Phenom I, LGA 775, LGA 1156, LGA 1155 chips fit into the equation.

GTX 500?

ATI 5000

ATI 6000

I would like to see dividing lines, these cards belong over here, these over here and I will even do a neat little graph if you guys can help me out so when the question is asked, all that has to be done is a reference to the list. Educate me on bandwidth, and every factor you would mathematically consider when pairing a video card and processor.

It varies based on the tool you are using for measurement.

Basically, there is no way you can determine it with math.

If you are using 3DM06 to measure, then a 480 would probably be fine with a dual core conroe.

If you are using BC2, then a GTS 250 is going to need an i7.....
