Just bought a 6850... whats next...

I just bought a powercolor 6850 for 100 bucks. Thought it was a good deal.

Anyways. What should I do next in regards to OCing / settings?

I tried overdrive and it didn't work to well at 825/1100, it passed but my screen started flickering every couple of seconds. Went back to stock settings
775/1000.

I noticed someone saying something about opencl is suppose to be checked which it isn't in gpu-z any ideas why?

In regards to settings, I haven't been up to date with computer stuff since... 2006 or earlier maybe, and there seems to be so much more customization...

In CCC there is GPU scaling... should I enable that?

I remember in the past, I should turn off AA and AF etc...

Should all that be left to default now?

**Used MSI Afterburner got 850/1050 tested using FURMARK for 2 minutes... seems okay so far
temp at 75C. Avg fps seems the same as stock though. Voltage i'm not sure cause I can't seem to chagne it with Afterburner... and i'm not sure if furmark's voltage caption is correct it says 1.15V

You can manage voltage in afterburner by going to Settings>General and checking the Unlock Voltage Control box under General Properties, as far as the 6850, I have mine running stable at 875mhz core clock and 1150mhz memory with 60% fan speed, though it's an XFX and from what i've read, they are excellent at staying cool. I'm envious of the price, I just bought an XFX 6850 Black Edition for $170 for crossfiring.

it was an open box. Checking that in after burner still doesnt let me change the voltage

I'm generally not a fan of Having to OC a video card.

You should beable to stably play a game at 60FPS (or whatever your Refresh is) without having to force OC to get a higher FPS, when benchmarking etc sure go for broke.

I've gotten 10% performance increase in FPS from a 1Ghz overclock on this 5870, would I feel safe leaving it there at 1Ghz, No.

Well The games i'm playing currently don't really require me to OC... my old video card (8800gt) was fine. I just bought this cause it was cheap and i'm making a new computer soon.

I tried after burner again after playing some counter strike and its running a bit

I got 850/1075. 850 seems to be the max for after burner, is that correct?

If my memory goes to high 1075ish+ it starts artifacting...

Benchmark for Furmark was @ 1080 preset

SCORE:1393 points (23 FPS, 60000 ms) @ 850/1075 @ 1080 preset

SCORE:2357 points (39 FPS, 60000 ms) @ 850/1075 @ 720 preset

SCORE:1277 points (21 FPS, 60000 ms) @ 775/1000 (stock)

this good? and does CPU effect the outcome?

Overclocking results can be quite random, but my HD 6850's run 1000/1200 with a voltage bump, and 925/1200 at stock voltage, without any trouble at all.

You need to edit the config file in order to unlock Afterburner.

Quote:
To enable the unofficial overclocking in this version it is necessary to edit the MSIAfterburner.cfg file located in the installation directory of AfterBurner (typically Program Files (x86) MSI Afterburner):

You need to alter the following:
Seek UnofficialOverclockingEULA field and add following text:
I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
Set UnofficialOverclockingMode to 1 to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path
I think there is one version of Powercolor HD 6850 which does not have the right voltage regulator, and cannot be voltage tweaked.

As long as your not artifacting, run a burn test for couple mins at that speed and make absolutely sure your not artifacting, Kombuster (comes with MSI afterburner) is good at detecting them I find.

Edit: And What Damric said.

You mentioned something about AA/AF and turning them off?

no! These are your eyecandy features. it's the point of buying a nice video card! Turn them as high as you can while still maintaining good FPS in the games you play.

Good benchmarks for this card are Unigine Heaven and 3dmark11, both of which the basic versions are free to download and use as many times as you want.
