Suggestions on My New CPU/Mobo/Ram/GFX/PSU Choices

Thread Starter
I want to upgrade to a I7 system. What Motherboard/CPU/Memory combination would be ideal? Would prefer a good OC'ing motherboard. Thinking about the 2600k for a processor. Is it really that good? Been out of the loop for a while.

Would like to stay under $800 if possible. I plan on updating my GFX Card, PSU, and possibly HDDs at a later date, so better cost efficiency if possible.

UPDATE:
After some suggestions and research myself. I have come up with this:

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
$224.99

Mobo: ASUS P8P67 EVO (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
$194.99

RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory
$89.99

GFX CardGIGABYTE GV-R687OC-1GD Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16
$199.99

PSU: CORSAIR Professional Series AX850 850W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
$189.99

What are you going to be using this PC for? 2600k doesn't do much for gaming; 2500k is a much better choice 95% of the time.

Edit: Gotta head out in a minute, but before I go, some recommendations for a gaming heavy PC.

GPU: MSI GTX 6950 Twin Frozr II or MSI GTX 560 Ti Hawk
RAM: (You'll need to upgrade to DDR3 'cause of the board) 8GB G. Skill Ripjaws
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k
Mobo: (Don't know much, this one looks OK? Leave this to other members, I guess) ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
Your PSU looks fine, as long as it's a decent 750W.

Total comes to about $750-800, I don't have time to add it up, but hope this helps!

Why isn't the 2600k that great for gaming?

It's not that the 2600K is bad for gaming; it just offers little advantage over the cheaper 2500K. The 2600K's hyperthreading only shines in heavily-threaded workloads such as video encoding, rendering, folding, etc...no games currently use 8 threads efficiently.

I see. So the extra 100 dollars isn't necessarily worth it unless you are editing video and what not, gotcha. I will probably go with the 2500k then.

Any suggestions on Mobo/Ram and if room in budget GFX Card?

I just picked up a 2x4GB kit of Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 from Newegg for $85: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233144

If you don't need SLI/CrossFire the ASRock P67 or Z68 PRO3 are great budget boards. I bought the MSI P67A-G43 as part of a Newegg combo.

If you do need multi-GPU capability, look into the ASRock Extreme4, Gigabyte UD4, MSI GD series, or ASUS P8P67 Pro/Deluxe.

If you will be continuing to use that 19" monitor, you don't necessarily need a super high end GPU. On the NVidia side, a GTX 460 or 560 will do; on the AMD side, a Radeon 6850 or 6870 will do nicely.

Another question. Is it worth it to even consider a 950? or does the 2500k whoop its ass?

Any mobo suggestions? As stated before I would like to have the ability to CF or SLI, but its not something I am gonna do soon.

Is this a good board?

ASUS boards tend to be very good in general, and that one is no exception. Can't go wrong with it. If you don't need the special features (SSD caching, ability to use onboard GPU) that Z68 provides, you might be able to save a few dollars by going with a P67 board.

Don't get X58 now - it's a zombie platform. If you absolutely need the high number of PCIe lanes that it provides, wait for LGA 2011 or AMD Bulldozer.
