Thanks for replying. That really is the way I want to go .

I have many large size bluray movies and I do want to feed the device thru the external and have eliminated Apple products for that reason. I don't want the extra step of uploading into tunes and my other requirement is to not have to convert the movies to a lesser format.

So the iconia or transformer type devices seem to be the best solution. Thanks for all of the input as it helped greatly. If anyone can think of anything to add...I'm listening.

Only one problem with all the android platforms. They cannot playback 720P mkv files. Just Google 720p mkv on Xoom and you will see. The results are mostly ads for video conversion program that convert 720p mkv to a lower res format that can be played by the Tegra 2.

You will need a Win7 tablet with fairly decent GPU for 720p mkv playback. Look at the Acer Iconia W500.

Thanks for that Wiz33. It seems that I have come full circle in my quest for a tablet that will do what I want . I'm thinking now that she might as well just use the Dell Studio 15 that she already has...maybe put a nice SSD drive in it and call it a day?

rep for you sir

Well, you can just try to play back some 720p MKV files. Most that don't play are those encoded in high profile, but those in baseline work well.

Sorry I am not very proficient with software and I don't know what that is (high profile...baseline). My movies are (HDx264) if that helps.

I assume you are talking about something with "720p HDTV x264" in it's title ;-). None of them will play on the Tegra2 platform.

I am going to PM you

edit: yes they do have that in the title

edit again: have decided to wait for technology in the tablets to catch up to laptops...or at least make some progress in that direction. Thanks to all who helped and you have been repped

Wait for Fall of this year, and save up for the next wave of Android tablets running on 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and Nvidia Tegra 3 Kal-El quadcore processor. Those should play HD videos up to 1080p no problem, even 3D games on 2560x1600 resolution.

Now that's what I'm after . The wife has a decent laptop and I don't want to buy something that will make me have to convert to low resolutions...and I really want to feed the device from an external source. Short of that...no sale

I bought the Transformer since I really love Honeycomb; the problems of being an early adopter though are inevitable, as this year we'll be getting those Tegra 3 tablets.

Oh well, there's Tegra 4 hexacore (?) after that anyway.
