It's true that android does not support hardware playback of mkv files at the moment but the 720p and baseline encoding is no longer an issue with the current 3.1 update. As long as the encode is in a container such as .mp4 or .m4v, playback is buttery smooth whether baseline or high profile. A simple handbrake conversion will take care of any issues you may have with encodes at a more than sufficient bitrate.
