Wanting to overclock the E7400 but temps already 40-50 C?

Hello!

This is my first post here, and i'm here today to ask you a question, wink.gif.

I wanted to go ahead and overclock my Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz E7400 but came across a little problem. I wanted to check the temperature of my CPU to know if I should overclock or not, so I installed speedfan and checked. My average temperature is 45C and sometimes rises to 60C when gaming. I do not think I can overclock with these temps without even overclocking.

So I wanted to know if this was normal, or if it was a crap CPU cooler.

Thanks!

If you need more info don't hesitate to ask!

Intel lists 74.1c as the max allowable temp for that chip. If you are on a stock cooler upgrading would give you some more headroom for overclocking. Otherwise just go up in small increments and run Intel Burn Test or prime95 and see how high the temperatures get.

Max meaning before it automatically shuts down, or max before physical damage?

And thanks!

It won't shut down at 74.1c, but run it over that temperature and you run risk of chip degradation and damage. I don't know what the thermal protection is set at on that chip but I'd imagine its well into the 80s or 90s c.

Ok, I will run prime95 after each overclock. Sorry I'm a bit noob at this but, which increments should i perform, in Mhz. Thanks!

Hey i'm using setFSB to overclock my e7400. And it says the clock generator is ICS9148BF-26, but there are like 200 others to choose from, although this one was chosen at default, is this correct and what is clock generator?

TDP just throttles the CPU, especially if you have speed step on. It will get slower automatically. So if you are worried about temps, keep SpeedStep enabled in the BIOS.

Why not overclock in the BIOS?

That's the "proper" way to do it.

As far as testing stability, run realtemp to monitor temperatures and Prime 95 torture test (Blend) for 8+ hours. If it passes it's at least relatively stable.

Also, if you are using the stock fan you generally won't get really far because of heat.

What cooler is it?

I'd start at 3.0-3.2 GHz ish at stock vCore and move up from there. I had an E7300 (2.66 GHz stock) and it would do 3.1 GHz on stock volts.
